Hey all,

I have an XJ cherokee, and often the alarm triggers itself for no good reason (that I can see). Sometimes it happens long after I've locked it, sometimes it happens immediately after I've locked it. I've checked that all the doors, boot and bonnet are closed properly. Any suggestions?

I used to have a grand Laredo. The alarm frequency used to be interfered with by mobile phone towers. If you parked within cooee of one it would play havoc with the alarm system. Jeep acknowledge this as a problem. When your problem occurs, have a look around on building tops to check for towers.

Bummer...

Plan B (long shot): Would anyone know what sensors would be affected, and if so how to disable them?

or Plan C: Does anyone know how to disable the alarm, so that I can still use the remote central locking?

When I had My problem, I asked Jeep about disabling the system, but they reckoned it couldn't be done. Whether or not they were only saying that, who knows. Their solution was to fit a frquency module from a New Zealand model which operated at a different frequency. However they would not pay for the repairs as it was out of warranty. Even though I explained that this would have been a problem from new (which they acknowledged), they only agreed to supply and fit at cost price. I told them to stick it and shortly after sold the vehicle

I do know that the alarm system has been a problem in some models and I have seen aftermarket alarm systems piggybacked on to the factory one. Try to find a knowledgable fitter of alarm systems and ask him if he could remove the Jeep system, then you could just fit Cobra system or similar and still use the Jeep door solenoids and sensors.

Can't be done? Hmmm... I would have thought that it wouldn't be too hard for anyone with a bit of sparky talent to disable an alarm. Maybe it's intentionally wired up to be difficult to disable.

the alarm is a black box located in an obsecure place under the dash try the right side of the steering wheel. If you don't want to pull you own jeep apart go to your local wreckers and pull one of theres apart. In the box your find an e-prom ( rectangle black silver legs ) pull it out this will disable the alarm. If the e-prom is soldered in you can trace the sensor wires one at a time by disconnecting them and connecting one at a time and setting your alarm between connections. When the alarm goes off the last wire you have connected has either a faulty sensor or cable possibly a continuity problem.

Remember if you are playing under the dash always DISCONNECT THE BARTTERY it will save you a broken neck ( air bags )
