1HZ for petrol 80s conversion(now autronic c'putr and turbo)

Yep the decision has been made and its now a case of getting the right parts to change from 4.5 petrol to 4.2D N/A or 4.2DT. Not interested in selling existing as too many modded parts to swap over also better the devil you know. Would prefer to run turbo straight up but will be happy to add later if good low km n/a can be found.

being a previous petrol fan I know little of what configurations are available for my swap. Questions are as follows:

1) are the diesel engines different in the 100s and will they fit
2) Can i adapt my original gearbox to any of these engines if not what mod is needed
3) What are the ancillary issues that need to be delt with ie; fuel tanks and lines, glow plug light adaptations and radiator etc.
4) advice on where to possibly source parts
5) if you have done this conversion already please supply as much detail as possible
7) any idea what a 190,000km 96'4.5 petrol well maintained engine is worth

Note: not interested in v8 diesel - love tojo relaibility: period.

Thankyou in advance for all helpful advice,

regards GUZZLA

Buy a diesel 80 and swap the bits, easier than a conversion...all wiring is different petrol to diesel not to mention fuel systems...best way to do it if you still want to is buy a rollover and change everything in one weekend....once it is all appart on the donor that is...and get a factory turbo diesel

Absolutely nothing, its in perfect condition. I just feel the need to swap to diesel for better range whilst touring. Fully loaded im getting 1350km from 280L. I should get atleast 2000km with the diesel as a min. the cost saving at the bowser is negligable as it would take about 130000ks just to break even. Im aware of the massive power decrease and will consider a turbo at a later date if finances dont permit now.

the truck is extensively set up and has copped its fair share of knocks over time and im really not interested in starting all over again, i love the old girl and dont see the point in getting something newer only to dent it up as well not to mention the depressing thought of having to repeat the amount of work already done.

It seems t be a lot of time and money for a conversion if you have a well running motor already, I don't think that for the extra km per litre that a conversion would be warrented. I have a 1hz turbo(not factory) with 200 litres on board and get just over 1000kms for the two tanks, thats after it has been dynoed for its best fuel efficiancy, but hey its your hard earned! Gazza!

It would be easier to get a 6.5t in it than a 1hz....your a sucker for punishment, but if your able to do things yourself, a donor wreck would be the best option.
I did something a little different, and bougfht a cheap t/d, b4 swapiing the good bits and selling the petrol std. Got the t/d cheap, sold the petrol cheap....and had 2 cars to drive for a few months...

Do you have a heavy foot because that sounds pretty thirsty, my old 2H turbo gets 650kms to 80 litres so your using 120 litres for only 350 more kays.

yes you are correct. after looking at the overall complexity of the project and the inconvienience of not having a suitable area to perform the work myself i now realise it to be an unreasonable exercise.

so after speaking to dow50r and a few others i will now just turbo what ive got and let all the extra power help me forget any extra fuel usage. :D

Thankyou all once again. ;)

It can be done with a donor vehicle cost about 5-6K for a wreck.

Having said that I saw a guy yesterday with a 1hz turbo auto and he said he was getting about 530kms per tank. Fark that, not worth the effort. I am ordering a long range tank today to get the range and put a manual box in it to pick up better mileage off road.

Is it on gas? If it's not what would that give you?

not interested in gas as all. firstly some of the places i go dont have gas, secondly i dont have room for a gas tank as already have 190L long ranger and thirdly Im not convinced that gas technology is as good as the industry makes out.

I will firstly have the vehicle fully checked over and tuned then dyno'd for a base reference then fit an autronic full sequential aftermarket computer to gain full control over the management system and allow access to all the areas the factory computer wont or cant.

Once the computer is installed and programmed on the dyno I will then know exactly what state of tune the engine is in and allow me to make good to any faults that may exist in its standard guise and provide a perfect platform with which to correctly install and tune the turbo fitted after.

I guesstimate that the system will cost around $3500 installed or double that of a unichip or the like but options for future tuning at a later date are far superior to the latter. Once correctly tuned this system alone will give me a vehicle that will drive silky smooth with power to boot and a marked improvement in economy under normal driving conditions.

I'll just have to wait and see, should all start happening on monday with any luck and I'll be sure to keep you posted - and by all accounts i should come out smiling if ive done my research.
