32-33's, welded front, without powersteer???

as the subject suggests how many people run that combo? is it really that hard to steer?
i would like to hear some peoples honest opinions that have experienced this setup before.
ideally i would like an to get a front airlocker, but.... i think i might just weld it up instead untill i get some more bucks, and just unlock a front hub when not needed. will this wear out one side of the diff more than the other? what about if i was to unlock different sides every now and then?
thanks in advance Andy.

Im running 32's with welded front and IMHO it a cheap and really improves offroad performance but the downside is it is hard work steering the thing especially if traveling down steep terrain.
I'm in the process of adding powersteering which should make it a hell of alot more enjoyable to wheel.

I drive mine like this and it is friggin hard to steer on flat even ground let alone side slopes or something. Leave one hub unlocked until you get to the hard stuff or get power steering.

I ran welded front with 32's for a long time, cheap and brilliant off road.
Agree with a bugger to steer down steep rocks, and I still loved it.
Its a bugger jumping out to lock/unlock one hub, but you learn to live with it.
I now have power steer and a lockright up front, much happier.
But glad I ran it welded for a long time.

Does anybody have any idea why the steering is heavy when going down hills
something to do with weight transfer???
What about just sorta flat ground driving does the car seem to push/ understeer into corners badly? or is that only really noticable when goin faster?
Thanks for the positive words so far fellas.
Anybody think i shouldnt weld my front diff?

I run detroits front and rear , which might as well be welded , but I did a low 2 conversion which makes turn easy and it slips in and out of 4wd easy as. As for unlocking your hubs not really the way to go , going down hills you want to use engine to break vehicle and with a hub unlocked this would cause the 4wd to want to go to one side . General driving is fine as well , as I have power steering . If you are running zuk diffs the cv's are as weak as piss , so leaving one hub locked could possibly make them easier to break . There should be a thread in the bible on low 2 conversion , Cheers Paul.

Yes more weight on front wheels.
Going up hill is easier.
Forget high speeds when in 4wd, too unpredictable, and yes steering does try to go straight ahead. OK in wet/soft/slippy stuff, as a step on the go pedal will get ya steering back.
Biggest danger is axle wind up and realease on harder surfaces, gives a sudden steering surprise..ok at low speeds tho.
If the ground is that flat, doubt you would need 4wd, so you unlock onr hub.
ANY CHANGE TO A CARS STEERING< DIFFS< SUSPENSION ETC MEANS RELEARNING HANDLING AS ITS ALL GOING TO BE DIFFERENT (often better, sometimes worse)

Thanks Christover, i understand it will handle differently so maybe i should just do it and see for myself
All comments seem to be fairly positive at the moment
MART i will have a look for info on the low 2 mod, i could see it working with a detroit or locrite coz they would disengage, but with a welded centre would it still push coz both wheels would still be turning at the same speed?, or would it not be as bad coz front diff isnt driven??

I wouldn't mind knowing more on the low 2 conversion as well! Sounds like a good idea especially for welded fronts.

Its also possible to twin stick a sierra t-case, so you have one stick for high and low, and one for 2/4wd

I have front and rear lock rites in mine with30's and when i go to 31's i think that will be bad enough!
NOw with 30's its had to turn with 32's i'm suprised it even turns!
Certainly makes it go alot better but it's hard work!

Note: You have to do both conversions
Starting to fix my other truck up soon (SWB ST, 33 X 12.5, SOA, wide track, welded F&R, S3, engine and gearbox undecided)
Twin stick is on the books, got the parts ready to go

with welded diffs aposed to lockrites and ez-lockers with 2lo makes bugger all difference , and can be funny when you shift it the wrong way tring to get another selection and carn't get out of low range ( as with the mod there becomes multiply shift patterns and can get confusing if not thought about first ).
power steering is easy to do and oh what a difference it makes .
weldit anyways you'll enjoy its capability as long as you are currantly driving hard enough terrain to need a locker other wise leave it as is , no point going harder steering if you are getting everywhere you want with out the locker , if you are getting stuck weld it and you 'll complain with the hard steering but you wont look back .
