2 weeks ago my wife discovered a nail in one the rear tyres on our 02' dual cab hilux...so she got the guys to fix it at her workplace (large transport company). Now the tyres are getting to the point of needing replacement and have uneven wear on them, but nothing too serious (I would of though anyways).
Straight after the tyre was fixed we started noticing a shake throughout the car...on 100km/hr it wasnt super bad, but bad enough to make me want to fix it. So we organised a wheel balance, and hoped for the best.
The shake is still there...so my wife took it to pedders (without my knowledge) for that $28 safety check thing they do.
Apparantly they have given her a list detailing things that need to be fixed with an estimated repair cost of near $2000. The things that she mentioned on the list were..
1) steering damper
2) tie rod ends
3) track bar
4) bushes (all)
5) springs and shocks
Now this vehicle is 5-6 years old, and has NEVER been offroad...so I cant see all of that needing replacement (unless you are a pedders shop owner and you are having a slow week). I also cant understand how any of the listed items would cause a sudden shake.
Its not like the shake got worse and worse...it wasnt there...we got tyre fixed...it was there.
Cant wait to see the full list of things that are apparantly in need of replacement...as the mechanic that I have used for years now has never pointed any of this out (though he has mentioned tyres) in any of the 5000km services (full inspections) he has done on it since we bought it.
Its no wonder the safety inspection from pedders only costs $28...the real cost comes with the repairs they make up.

I dont know about pedders, but i know a bloke whos a mechanic at holden.
anyway he said to me they get paid a commision and bonus based on extra crap they sell.
eg you get your new commodore serviced.
oh you need new wiper blades, and yeah the brakes need some adjusting,
anything that wasnt perfect he said they used to list.
now if your tie rod ends had a tiny bit of play, they arent perfect=need replacing.

OK I have got the list and all the details as to what they think is wrong with it....
FRONT :
Shocks need renewal, Requires torsion bar adjustment, Lower and Upper Ball Joints worn, Sway Bar Bushes worn, Steering Damper worn, Wheel Bearings require adjustment and tyres have scalloped edges.
REAR :
Shocks worn, Tyres have scalloped edges.
Now the shake does not feel like a steering shake...more of a vehicle shake. The faster the vehicle goes, the worse the shake.
The vehicle had its last service no more than 1 month ago, so I cant see it being the wheel bearings.
The tyres are slightly more worn on the centre of the tread compared to the outside area of the tread...But it doesnt look to be anything that would cause the wobbles.
Would the Ball joints cause a wobble if they were worn?

Chuck the spare tyre on instead of the repaired one. Or the other way round, to eliminate the repaired tyre/spare as the culprit of the vibration. Also check the wheel nuts!

we had similar problem in work ute (triton pos) would get the shakes at 80 and up and went to tyre service they said the tyre had broken down on the inside if that makes sense 2 new tyres problem gone im thinkin what ever patch they used must be heavy enough to off balance the wheel
If i just overtook you head to your nearest mechanic
Also look at the tyres for a spot in the tyre where there is less of a worn patch but more tread could be the tyre starting to go out of round slighlty but if they need new ones see if it's there after. wouldn't have been a bit of dirt or some kind of crap holding the rim slightly off the mounting surface.

i had a similar problem with my ute, had 2 wheel aligns from different mobs, and still had shake/wobble at 80kms. took it to a truck wheel alignment bloke, he spun them up on his machine and found that tyres were out of round, there were getting on a bit anyway. (BFG AT's) so got some new muds and that fixed the problem. so yeah it could probly be the tyre.
