Depends which model you're looking at. The Navara is sold in 2 different models one of which is the 3 litre turbo diesel and the newer one is the new 2.5 litre engined turbo diesel.
If it's the 3 litre one you're looking at then yes it's the same engine as the Patrol but it doesn't have an intercooler and it uses a standard "wastegate" type turbo compared to the Patrol's "variable vane" type.
The are isolated reports of engine problems with the Navara's but certainly not to the extent that has been reported with the Patrol's. This however may be because there are far fewer ZD30 engined Navara's compared to Patrol's.
Regards Andrew.

don't think so.
afaik aussie dosn't get the 2.5 litre D22, only the 3 litre (NZ only get the D22 2.5 in 2wd). there is also the D40 which has the more powerfull 2.5 litre. seeing as the D40 is relatively new, majority of later model navarras on the road will be running the 3litre.
most of the problems with the patrol seem to be ECU, sensors, egr and varible vane turbo related. ie fault in egr or sensors causes turbo to overboost. fortunatly the navara dosn't have that problem. it dosn't have the MAF sensor which seems to be comman cause and the egr is easly blocked off
