"Rover" Wins TT

Well, a Rover has won Tough Truck, well sort of. The vehicle is a 1986 Rover Bushranger 4.8L with the following mods:

Transfer gears, 4 wheel steer, air bag over coilover shocks, 39 Bfg crawler tyres, unimog portals, Nissan diffs, rover running gear. Basically the same car as last year with a few mods and 1 year of driving.

Driven by:

Total Care 4WD /
ABT Racing (NSW) Mal Van Ysseldyk & Nick Finch

Saw this vehicles there last year and it was very impressive indeed and the motor was easily the best sounding unit there. Well done guys.

Note the Nissan Diffs!

That was just the sweetest truck out there (and also Phil Nobel's black Patrol). If the BushRangie isn't a buggy, it cant be far off. What makes it even more impressive, is that it wasn't running big tyres either.

Didn't we agree to disagree. BUT i told ya so nissan diffs are the way to go!! :lol:

Just fitted a rear GQ in my Dakar/Bushie.

This weekend I'll get the front in complete with GQ steering box.

Then in goes the Nissan 5 speed and t/case all hooked up to a Lexus motor.

The only rover bits left are the chassis, wiring and dashboard. Pity about the wiring!

Yeah

I knew I'd take some flak about the Nissan diffs :roll:

But then agin, Mog portals would also help heaps in taking the strain off the diff centres :cool:

Well Done!!!

It has most of a rangie chassis doesn't it? And most of a bushrangie body?

Therefore IMO it is somewhere between a truck and a ruggie/truggie. But not a full-on buggy. Not much different to Pete's 40 series really.

So looking for tech here.

As I understand it, the portals have been cut off the mogs, or unbolted, and then attached to Nissan Patrol axles. I assume also that there has been enough resultant width with that setup to allow the DS tube on the rear to be cut from the patrol axle to offset the rear diff to the DS (like on the rovers) also when the portals have been added. Also I assume with the front the PS axle tube has also been cut down to bring the track into line with whatever the rear produced. Then axles made to suit.

Such a good way to get rid of the mog pinion. This should work with LC60 axles also.

It is basically an OZ variant of the Mog 9 (ford 9" with mog portals) which is so popular in the US. Mog portals unbolt from the rest of the mog housing.

The portals are 2-gear - so you need to flip the diff centres in the housings unless you want 5 reverse gears and 1 forward gear (unless you are turning the engine around 180 degrees like in a lot of buggies).

Thats interesting. If you flipped the centres then you'd have to flip the cover plates also so the CW will fit and alter the CW slot into the housing. It'd also give you Hi-pinion.

Maybe im off track here.. but its more likely that he cut the axle flange ends off and welded the unimog axle tube over the existing nissan axle tube or welded the flange to to the end of axle tubes to bolt on the axles and sat the whole housing upside down to get the correct drive.

Not rotating the centres around or cover plates?? (if i read what you said right)

Here is a cropped pic of how he'd done it.

It looks like he's added the flanges to the ends of his axles so that the portals will bolt on. I understand he beoke a portal on Sunday and lent one from the mog axle seller up there. Though I'm not sure what he has done to the centre.

They are complete new tubes cut to length, replacing any old or fatigued metal from either factory housings.
Yes u can obtain either high or low pinion.........using either front or rear centres. Alot will depend on your setup..........sometimes low pinion is needed ;)
Some might also say its running on the wrong side of the gears, but with the load point now being in the hub, you will have alot less issues

either way, its not a cheap or simple exercise.
