More power please
More power please
Finally got my car back after two months of waiting for a 16v efi conversion. Super happy with the power increse but can you go more??? I know that nearly everyone that buys a suzuki soon realises that they are underpowered and everyone tell them to make their engine breath better etc etc BUT now i want to know how to make an 1.6 efi better!?! Already has extractors and kn filter, what else can i do? What does upgrading the computor do??? Can it be adjustable?? Cam upgrades???
Any information would be fantastic.
Thanks guys

Aftermarket computer does wonders for the 1600 efi. I run a link ems and it runs excellent.. Quicker than my gilfriends proton gti... Till 140km/h anyway.. Ems is dear though... Well worth the $$$

I run a 1.6 8V carb motor .. sure it could use more power, but it has got enough grunt to pull me down the road on heavy bias ply 35 inch claws.
I would like slightly lower gears in it to help keep the motor in the best\most useable part of the rev range (about 3500 to 3700 rpm)
It runs a stock 1.68v bottom end with a 1.3 litre head with a good 3 nagle valeve job on 1.3 intake vales and 1.6 exhaust valves with a reground cam designed for low to mid range power boost, it has also been port matched to the intake and extractors ..
The valve and cam work made a huge difference in the engines torque curve with noticeably more grunt all the way through the rev range ..
I had clocked it (via GPS) pulling 160 Kph on 32inch BFG's on the eastern freeway.. ( is a very slight down hill run ) Let me tell ya ... thats scary ..

I'm running a 16v 1.6 GV (soft-top) with K&N Pod filter and just got a straight through muffler but haven't put it on the dyno yet... which is just as well 'cause it's become rather loud and I'm putting in a ressonator as well... so I'll get it on the dyno when it's all done.
If you've already got extractors, I would expect there have been some changes to the rest of the exhaust system, no? If you're running a standard GV muffler, ditch it and substitute it for something smaller with a straight through design (check noise levels though).
Of course the exhaust changes on their own won't let you compete effectively with a Proton GTi but it's a lot cheaper than a chip!
But if you've got the dough, there are plenty of re-programable piggy-back systems that'll give you 'amazing results' (when programmed properly)... Pitty I'm just too poor for those
Oh, remember to let us know Dyno results of the before and after, when you get anything done!!!!

Hehehehe... I know what you mean! Took the Terios to neat 170kms/h on the speedo (168 on the speedo?) around a slight corner... very "light" feeling... and I was on standard sized Bridgestone ATs!

Okay okay i have already the better filter and the extractors and the performance exhaust. I have been quoted $6000 to $8000 for a turbo which i think is a bit rich for me. One of my customers who is into zooks suggested a cam upgrade and the a different computor??? The cam i was going to speak to my mechanic about but the computor is what has me stumped I rang one guy for a quote and I THINK it was for a EMS system and he wanted $1900. Does that figure sound about right??
Thanks for your help again

Need is never the word mate, its all about want The truth is mate is i hardly go rock climbing or severe off roading. I go fishing and do alot of beach work. Every month you are almost guaranteed that i will do anywhere between 1500 and 2500kms on a fishing trip. So getting there in a reasonable ammount of time is always very important ( Wanna spend more time fishing not driving )
So there is my reason and dont forget that until recently i had a 1.3!!!!!! So i know what its like. Get to 100kmh, find hill, change gears to 3rd, get down to 75kmh blah blah blah

Another thing about an aftermarket computer is that I have excellent fuel economy.. That is if I dont drive it hard. I have a long range 70L tank and get 600km range of city driving and nearly 730km on the highway. I use mine for pizza deliveries on weekends and i use basically no fuel. I forgot to mention that I am running a 1L transfer case which allows me to drive 5th gear at 60km/h and still power up hills. On the highway I sit at 120km/h and it revs at 3700rpm. But I have lost the higher RPM.. It redlines at 6000rpm instead of 6500.. I noticed a big difference in power when I put the 1L transfer case in, it jumps of the lights and goes awesome. Not sure how you can get the power of a turbo 1600 to the ground... I can spin 3rd gear whilst running 30 inch muds. For $300 get a 1L transfer case and see how it goes. It makes a big difference.

You'll need a new EFI computer (or reprogrammed standard one) to run with the cam.
The EFI price sounds about right as the following will need doing: harness rewiring to suit the new computer, some sensors may need to be changed, it will need to be programmed, dyno time will hopefully be covered in that price which will be at least a couple of hours..... Things like cold start mixtures also need to be set up and are very hard to do (ie you only get one chance first thing in the morning!)
It can involve a lot of time to get it running properly, so make sure the guy you get to do it is willing to give you the back up support. Don't expect an aftermarket EFI set up to run as smoothly as a factory job either unless a lot of time ($$$) is spent on programming.
David
I must admit i still would like reasonable fuel economy. I know with any power upgrade you are going to use more fuel that just makes sense.
By the sounds of it i should be leaning more towards the aftermarket computor. Just gotta find the right guy to do it here in perth
Any brands better than the other???

RE
The programming needs to be 100% with the aftermarket computer. I originally used an Injec ems and I had nothing but issues. The car spent more time being tuned and off the road than it ever did running well. I threw the piece of junk in the bin and bought the Link ems. Runs perfect, even cold and was well worth the $$$.

I have chatted with guys in the US that have done cam upgrades on 16v efi motors on Zuks, basically they have jsut bolted it in and run with it ..
Most said that they had more grunt in whatever area the cam was designed for .. never did hear about engine longevity though
