Hi all,

Ive just purchased a 80 Series, trading in my GQ Patrol for it.

Its an Auto with 194,0000 K's on it and in very good condition, apparently this truck has seen very limited off road use.

Question

Are there any 3FE trick bits available or any engine mods that will improve the motor at all.

Ive heard that the timing can be advance as toyota runs the engine in a slight retarded setting, what should I start the advance at and what benefits will I gain by doing in this.

At the moment she is a real pig off the mark, but as the revs climb she seems to get a second wind and then takes off, but by the time that happens its all over red rover.

All help would be appreciated.

The injected 3f was worse than the carbi.....pull the cam out of it and put a normal one in, and you will get better bottom end. Shave 60 thou off the head and you will get descent compression, port and pollish it, even better, extracters as a minimum and yes, you can advance the dizzy, but if it pings, the puter will retard it again and you will be worse off.
60 thou, cam, extracters and gas....but in reality, no matter what you do, you will still have a 3f...they use fuel and go nowhere fast....commodore v8 is a good option, marks adapter kit yada yada...its all money....probably the cheapest way to get something nice is put a toyota diesel in it from a wreck...buy the lot for 4k from pickles.com...then your cruiser will get good economy and go better than it does now.
And you will get your 4k back when you sell it...plus you will make money on spares left over.

Steve, firstly get a good air cleaner then open up the AFM and loosen the big cog two notchs. Just cut the silicon around the black cover gently and then the cover should lift up, try and keep it clean inside, mark where the cogs are now just in case, now loosen big cog two clicks, put cover on and silicon. Now adjust your timing to 10 degrees, loosen bolt on distributor and turn anti-clockwise 5mm, best to use timing light and the timing marks on the flywheel with a wire in terminals TE1 and E1. You should have smoother engine. :D Next is exhaust, run twin 2 inch off the standard headers thru the cats and all the way to a nice flowing muffler (sports) then a 2 and three quarter tailpipe. :D Now thats the engine, next is 4.88 ratios that really makes the 3fe come alive  . cheers mick
