Do they come with replacement tailgates?
This will cause a big increase in load on the gate. Most Hard driven sierras I have seen already have cracked tailgates or torn/cracked hinges. This will greatly speed up the process.
Strengthening the tailgate, IMHO, is very important when you go to a larger spare.

As always your right extending it will add fulcrum and cause some problems but Im willing to try it for the sake of keeping the spare out side.Gwagensteve wrote:Do they come with replacement tailgates?

My first thought with this, but I'm sure you could engineer a solution.Gwagensteve wrote:Do they come with replacement tailgates?

It will work for a while and depending on what sort of driving you do (i.e lots of corrugated roads etc) it might do the trick for ages, but eventually, it will crack the gate.bushpig59 wrote:As always your right extending it will add fulcrum and cause some problems but Im willing to try it for the sake of keeping the spare out side.Gwagensteve wrote:Do they come with replacement tailgates?

PS, not sure what size spare you are trying to get on the back, but you have taken the rubber stops of the tailgate? Also, if you have onboard air, you can run the spare flat - then it will clear the bumper when you shut the gate.
Some washers under the bottom two lugs will also kick the bottom out too to clear the rear bumper.
Just some ideas.

Yes true that. A bandaid fix for the offroader. Prob last for a while onroad, but corrigations and bumps will kill the tailgate/back door quick!! Just increased the power of the 'can opener'. Only real solution is to make a swing-away tyre carrier or weld it shut and strenghten on a soft top.Gwagensteve wrote:Do they come with replacement tailgates?

Or you could just make up something like this.
It is only the hardtop Vit's that you can't fit a 30" + tyre on, the softop Vit's have the spare wheel carrier higher.

Spare Tyre spacers
Funnily enough, I have a 31in tyre on the spare of my Vitara (98 model). It rests on the bumper bar, but I like that, as it gives it support, and the whole weight of it isn't hanging off the rear door. All I have to do is lift it a tad as I open the rear door of the car (hard top).
In my view, its a perfect set-up.

This is not uncommon at all. Builtforthrashing doesn't run that much tyre/offset either, but corrugations and lots of fast dort will do this.
