Hilux wont stop cranking!

Started having this problem last week and has happened twice now, go to start my lux and it fires up but the starter doesnt disengage and so it makes that horrible sound when the clucth is doing overtime in the starter. Naturally i turn the key off straight away, only to find this cuts the fuel, the engine stalls (90' mod 2.8 diesel) but the starter keeps cranking. Only way i can find to stop it in a hurry is grab a spanner and undo the battery terminal.
Starter motor is only 12 months old. I thought the ignition barrel may be sticking, but all other IGN activated things go off with the key, just that the starter keeps goin. None the less i sprayed some crc down the barrel.
Just happened again so i took the starter relay out and filed the points, although they looked fine, as new inside!

anyone had this happen before? could it be a starter motor problem? I figure power needs to be getting to the swicth wire on the starter when it shouldnt be, so im looking further up the line.. ie relay or ignition barrel
thanks for any heads up!

I'd guess the starter solenoid (on the motor itself) is jamming.

When you turn the key the solenoid coil creates a magnetic field to pull (something) in and complete the high current circuit for the starter motor. When you release the key, the magnetic field stops, the (something) returns to where it belongs and the starter motor circuit is broken.

I reckon the (something) is jamming - or the return spring is buggered. Either way, the starter motor circuit stays closed when it should open.

Pull the starter, disassemble and clean.

Good luck,

Scott

sounds to me mate that it's the electrical part of the ign switch i'd suggest taking the electrical part of the switch off and stick a screwdriver in it and test it that way. - process of elimination

my 2 cents

I had this prob in my first car, hq prem 202. hold the key in the start pos for to long and the starter would overheat and keep crankin till the batt was disconnected. i neva fixed it just didnt hold the key to long. try having the igniton on run a wire from batt to solenoid, if it dosent keep crankin try the swith, if it does keep crankin starter motor

Just check to see if you still get voltage at starter solenoid when key is truned from start to run position.

If no - faulty starter solenoid, check/clean/replace (DONT FILE CONTACTS, this will f@#k them).

If yes - sticky relay/faulty ign switch/ dodgy wiring

Starter overheating causing solenoid to stick maybe? Low battery voltage, coroded battery terminals, too small battery leads, RS starter will all do this.
As MrSmith said, process of elimation
