Not sure if any one can help.

We have an auto 4.5 Litre Cruiser.

When driving along and backing of the accelerator it has a big clunk coming through drive train. It feels like the diff or something when it is backing down a gear.

Does anyone know what this is. I have experienced it in some other cruisers and would be nice to get it fixed.

Thanks for the assistance.

all it is is back lash in the drive train. .because they are full time 4wd they have more back lash because there is more moving parts to take up the lash in..

only real fix is part time kit, u can put new end plates on the front and that will fix it a bit but it will still be there

Have a look under the vehicle , if there's oil weeping around the diff's pinion flange grab hold of the tailshaft and see if you can move it up and down if you can and it's the pinion flange that's moving you've got diff' bearing's that aren't happy.
You can just tighten the pinion nut but these diff's have a collapsible spacer that is now to short so when you tighten the nut the bearings will have the wrong preload on them and it won't last long.
Also check tailshaft for play in splines and uni's and make sure it's got grease in it where it should.

sounds like universal joints. easyest checked with wheels off the ground, in neutral , and park brake off. don't forget to check the front as well

JDS, my mate had the same prob in his 80, was the backlash. Installed a part time kit and he says it`s gone.

They are $500 delivered im pretty sure.

Well checked all the universals etc. today. They seem good. So looks like it will be getting a part time kit installed.

Will let you all know the result.

Cheers

I got rid of most of the back lash in my 80 by changing the front drive flanges as they were badly worn only cost me $80 each side.
How many kms has it done?
You may also need the backlash adjusted in fth front diff.

why?? they all do this, you will find your front c/v's are worn and/or the drive plates, usually need doing around 250kms anyway, put new of these in and it will be as good as new again
