Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey, sorry if this question has been addressed in the past, but i'm short of time right now and can't go searching...
I need to know if the starter from a 1.6 tracker or sidekick is the same as that in a 1.3 samurai... i am in need of a starter for my sammy and i found a great deal on one for a tracker.... they look the same... does anyone know for sure???

I have used bit 1.3 and 1.6 starters in my 1.6 .. with a 1.3 box behind it ..

according to the online bosch catalog - the starters for sammy and kicks have the same part number

I thought the 1.6 had a lower geared starter motor - making it better for when you "starter over" a rock or something...

The motor parts are totally interchangeable .. (I can take exploded mud filled starter pics of a 1.3/1.6 starter hybred some time this week when I pull mine out to clean it .. somehow .. it got mud in it ?? dunno how that happened ... again

BTW what is wrong with your other starter that you need another ?? They are pretty robust lil units The only isseues I have had with mine centre around water and mud gettiing into it .. a bit of a clean and some lanlolin spray it's good to go again .. for a while

Hey... i don't really know what's wrong with my 2 bad starters. They will both make noise like they're trying but nothing happens. When my friend hooked it straight to a battery he told me that the part that is supposed to wind out to turn the motor over doesn't come out . Both starters seem to have the same prob. Do you think there is some way i might could fix 'em?

Check this out... I got an interesting opinion on the starters....can anyone validate this?
"You can use it (a starter from a sidekick on a samurai) but you risk damaging your ring gear / flywheel. This sidekick (17070) starter is a PMPGR (Permanent Magnet Planetary Gear Reduction) and the one you need is an OGR (Offset Gear Reduction)"
I guess this would mean it probably wouldn't be good to buy the sidekick starter for my sammy :(

Does the starter attempt to turn over at all? if the solinoid just clicks let me know and i will point you towards the fix... very simple

I have never seen any different ones ... perhaps there is some difference I am unaware of in the US .. ( I am assumiing your in the US as you call your Zuk a sammy) ...

I'm under the impression that critter has one of the planetary type setups... not sure though

I got a PM from crombiex regarding this issue with the starter but didn't have an answer for it... thought i would post it up here and let the forum have a think about it

Sounds like the overunning clutch in the starter motor is toast. You can try pulling it apart and cleaning everything but more than likely will need to replace.

Turning over, but not making contact with the engine. Apparently the bushes are stuffed.

Been waiting since November for a replacement for mine. Refuse to pay the $1000 price tag for a new one from Suzuki.

(If anyone knows where I can get a cheap GV starter motor, would love to hear from you)

i bought a new starter the other day - $190 and it wasnt even a change over ! - not a GV tho

They should not be all that hard to rebuild .. only has a few moving parts.

The normal issue I have had with mine is rust .. the plunger in the solinoid gets rusted/mudded up and sticks .. During the last rebuild I have actually painted the plunger and inside of the solinoid with a very tuff teflon paint goop . Hopefully it will stop the rust etc .. starter still works great ..

I am not a big fan of keying over obsticles as it puts heaps of load on the bushes in the starter housing and they are not really user replaceable ,,

this is an old thread.

I'm in need of a starter again, and thought there may be some advantages to a vit starter over a sierra one?

Starter Motor is fixed now, how embarrassing
Was just a loose bolt at the bottom of the starter, this and the slight film of oil caused a bad earth spasmodically. IE not quite enuff power to throw the solenoid far enuff, nor spin the motor fast enuff. But at times it worked OK.
Thanx for everybodies input/help, as it will all be useful some day.

Also I found my mates starter from an auto vit, stored at my place, looks exactly the same, but maybe it wasn't from the vit, just it was in the pile of bits needed?
