Im planning on using 42.4mm OD gal pipe for my exo cage for the zook, but do i use 2.6mm or 3.2mm wall thickness, is 2.6 enough? Its not for a roll down the hill strength, mainly flop on side strength.

flop 2.6 will be fine if you are running cdw \ cds \ dom, if its steam pipe I would run 3,6 BUT I am not an expert on this stuff, all the cages I used to get built by bonds (internal) were 2.6 cdw

My first exo was built from 4mm wall throughout and it took a good hiding. My current exo is built from 4mm wall in the high impact areas (from front bar to B pillar) and 3.2 from (and including) B pillar back. After a few good rolls, it's obvious what's 4mm and what's 3.2mm. The 3.2 has dented far easier and suffered a lot more damage than the 4mm. My vehicle weighs around 1600-1750Kg and does have a hard life. Based on my experience, I'd use 3.2mm wall for a zook on all external barwork. Bracing could be downsized though.

So guru what is the problem with gal!

Besides having to remove the gal prior to welding

Hehe yeh gal isnt a problem if ya grind it back, just some extra piece of mind against the dreaded rust. Man this exo will weigh more than the zook is what im worried about, a zook just wasnt meant to take the stress.

thickness makes stuff all difference. on my truck with full exo the difference was about 12kgs if i went 2.6 vs 3.2 for the complete cage. I went 3.2 for all structural stuff and everything that could contact at some point. The weight difference is simply like having a tube 37.2od and .6mm wall inside the 42.4odx 2.6mm tube (difference between 2.6 and 3.2)

or mild steel :finger: ......

i personally wouldnt use gal either as it is more time consuming and once you have welded to it it is just as prone to rust as normal mild steel tube anyway.... painted tube is cheaper anyway
