front GQ airlocker into GU

I know this has been covered but I need definite answers before I rip the front diff apart. I know my GQ center will bolt it just the compatibility of the airlocker. Can my GQ center with the old RD09 locker fit into the GU which use an RD78A. The RD78A which has superseded the RD09 has different thrust blocks, different differential case and uses 4 small cross shafts instead of 2 small and 1 big used in the RD09. I was first told you just need to replace the thrust block because the GU axles fit in further but now they told me all this other stuff may need to be changed but no definite answer? Has anyone done it with just changing the thrust block?
Any help would be great
Cheers Julian

from what I've been told only the cross shafts need to be changed or you can cut 5mm of the end of each drive axle n it will all bolt in, thats what I did as I was in a hurry

Mine is a absolute standard front GQ air locker and have just knocked 5mm off the axles and it works fine and never had an issue in 2yrs. It just means that you need to take 5mm off the end of your spare axles as well but you won't be breaking a GU axle/CV very often at all.

if its the thrust block, its $11 for arb. Id rather do that then shave the axles. Anyone know?

Yes it is cause of the thrust block. I got both axles and a spare set machined down for nothing and have not broken one in 2yrs.

Yep, I agree with Linc.

We've fitted a number of GU housings into GQ comp trucks, fitted the GQ centre complete with RD09 locker, lopped 5mm off each GU axle & no problems.

The spacer may be a simpler solution, but I have never tried it.

ok, ill check out the price to install this kit and if its too expensive, maybe shaving the axles will be my only option

I agree with Linc also.
GQ center in GU diff for two years also 200 rw kw turbo 6 and no issues, just remove a little more than the chamfer on the end and re-chamfer it.

Give ARB at Moorebank a call on 02 98213633 and ask for a bloke named Cosmo. I was in the same boat.. he knows all.

All you have to do is remove the long cross shaft an put 2 short shafts in then no worries about cutting axles an most people will have spare cvs but wont have one with 5mm cut off.

rang up cosmo from ARB Moorebank today, what a champ. Got it sorted finally. Like many have said, its a definite you need to remove the one long and replace it with two short and remove the thrust block. When i get around to it, will post photos for future reference ;)
