Power steer 4 comp rig

I been building my rig 4 awhile and what the best hydro or normal power steer. Thanks 4 the help.

If you have been building your rig for a while, it's probably too late to make that decision, as (I imagine) you have already built it around a steering box.
Best for what? If you want to keep your car registered, you won't be able to run full hydro as there is no mechanical connection between the wheels and the steering wheel, but certainly in vic (and I think NSW) Hydro assist is legal.
not all steering boxes can be modified to run hydro assist, and you are up for probably $1K worth of stuff to make it work, but it is the best compromise between conventional feel and hydro power.
You need to provide much more information for this question to be able to be answered though.
What motor/axles?
Do you already have a power steer setup?
Are you going to keep reg or road drive it?
What do you want to compete in? some classes mandate a steering box
what tyre size?
what suspension set up?
What's your budget?
What's "best" all depends on what you are doing with the car.

The truck been set up winch challenge & Superior allterrain. Its running rover diffs, Efi 4k and set 34x10.5 JT2. Its never goin to be on the road. Im not really worried about the work invovled in the setup.

I suggest you carefully read the rules associated with the competitions you wish to enter. I would be very surprised if winch challenge permitted full hydro, as this is usually only permitted with full tube buggies.
Hydro assist should be fine though.
With the information you have supplied though, I can't be more specific than that - People have used vitara boxes, cressida boxes, landcruiser boxes, and I am sure others too but what you can run will be determined by your suspension set up and what you have done with the chassis.
(i.e landcruiser boxes run a forward facing pitman arm so you might have suspension/engine mount problems)
Not all of the suitable boxes you could run will be able to be modified to run hydro assist.
Lots of people have run the tyre size you want to run with manual steer and conventional power steer - how much work you want to do to have lots of steering power is entirely up to you.

I have checked the rules of the Qld winch. There is no restrictions on steering in Super A class & Outlaw class in superior. I think i would be better off with the vitara box. Will the vitara box handle the load of 37s in the future. Thanks Steve for all your help mate. Brad

Have a look at the IFS Hilux box. Its just liks a vitara box but bigger.

Hey Jim, Greg and I looked at this long and hard and unless the car has LOTS of track width, the tyres will foul the box as it sits outside the chassis rail rather than inside.
The "perfect" box as far as we could see was a LHD hilux box, but as these are a litte hard to come by around here, we went with the vitara box.
Greg's steers well on the move with the AU pump (and is very light) , but it can jam a bit when stationary and the engine is at idle. Probably no worse than a stock GQ though on the same size tyre.

Wouldn't Rover diffs provide enough width?
Regarding the pump if it's loading up maybe look at getting a pump modified for a higher flow. We're in the process of having the same thing done on the buggy with the Camry pump.

I have heard but not yet verified early model big Fords ( 70's Fairlanes and LTDs) have hydo assist which can be retro fitted and engineered
Thats all I know on this
