diesel power up

One day down the track I'll be lookingg to rebuild and turbo my td42, can anyone tell me is it possible to do things like bore and stroke a diesel engine in the quest for more power/torque?

no idea on that specic motor but in general all the traditional mods still apply. you can bore it out, provided you can get oversize pistons. how much oversize depends on the motor, how thin it gets before problems arise. also if your motor can be resleeved is better.
stroking, cranks can be offset ground or replaced with a new one. however don't exspect custom ones to be cheap.
the other thing is compression, bore/stroke will up the compression depending on piston used. something to watch. going to high will lead to problems with turboing. going low wil help if you want to push big boost but can get poor offboost performance.
if your turboing an atmo motor i would keep the mods mild exspecially if your motor dosn't have piston oil spray bars.

Being a diesel, your main mod is always going to be what turbo and boost you're running.
In which case boring and stroking for extra capacity are pointless. They're also removing material and strength from the block.

pointless ?? not necessarily so. it all comes down to how much much strength you are going to loose. if they are a tuff motor its probably not to bad. especially if you only going to lightly turbo it (due to it being an atmo motor) then old fashion cubic inches can help especially off boost.
i would have to research it but you could probably get it to 4.5-5 litre just with over-sized pistons. if your doing a reco it cost nothing more to do.

Could twin turbo to help make power but you don't twin turbo in the same way as a petrol engine.
I got a hold of a diesel referance book, it pretty good as it's about all diesels (cars/ truck/ boat/ factory) and how they produce power and what tuboing etc will do for diesels, has stuff about the pumps, incoming/exhuast and scavaging etc.
I've havn't read much of it, but there's quite a few different ways to get power and boring and stroking don't need to be done it would seem.
also bigger exhuast will help heaps for a diesel, have you thought about that?.
Your biggest problem is EGTs but also vacum is another problem for diesels this coming from the book.

Do you mean "The Diesel Engine Reference Book" published by SAE?
I recently bought my own copy of that. Fantastic reference covering everything from thermodynamic theory to manufacturing compromises.

I think this one is a different one.
Diesel Engine Reference Book, rev 2.
by Butterworth Heinemann.
Has about 20 different diesel engine experts from around the world putting in their little bit about diesel engines.
ISBN 0 7506 2176 1
This book could be the updated version to your book, no idea though.

Same book, but bought through SAE. Mine is 2nd edition as well. SAE on the cover, Butterworth-Heinemann inside the cover.

Great book, but still has a few screwups in it. Figure 11.23 is a typical mistake.

Stu,
I would look at rebuilding it to factory spec and then getting a trick fuel pump and a BB turbo and good intercooling. i think the hp gain you would get from this would make you happy.
Mine has this done and is pumping 160rwkw and still has heaps more room for tunning.
It is using around 16/17L per 100kms with 35" tyres and 6 inch lift.
If you keen to go for a run a day let me know.

I'm with Daniels, BB turbo, cooler, mod pump, I wouldn't go crazy boring any boosted engines having seen a number of split bores.

Get it gas injected i've got it on my turbo diesel hilux and the power increase is amazing

Gas injection certainlay makes power, just dont be tempted to tinker and add more gas as the detonation that follows when the gas compression ignites will blow holes in piston pretty quick.

Yeah I think this would be the best way to go, betta start saving my pennies I guess, can you give me any details on your set up-what turbo, custom manifold? etc cost?
Are you in Perth? would love to go for a run

The gas can be adjusted (within reason) for more power or more economy as you like and can be increased for power with the adition of an intercooler make sure the gas comes in after the intercooler not before the gas setting is changed by the installer the guy who installed mine said come get mine changed whenever i want no charge and it can be changed to suit otherdriveline mods of all the mods i've done i'd say gas is the best of them

if you are pulling it down. id go a mild cam, tuned to suit the turbo setup you are going to run.
little bit of head work just to clean it all up
then spend the rest on a good intercooled bb turbo setup.
