Middy roof options

Hey guys,

I've done a quick search and cannot find what I'm after. Have also PMd Meldge but he appears to not check his e-mail ( or isn't here any more).

I'm giving strong thought to playing (removing / cutting down) the FRP on my middy.

Main hope is that it will reduce the COG (truck has around 3-4 inches of lift plus 33s or 34s)

I was looking at something similar to that of Sam Badderly's modified 73 series ( as seen in a recent Overlander edition).

Has anyone done this (remove the section from the B pillar backwards, leavng the section above the driver)?

Any problems?

As for covering the tub and sealing the rear of the cab, I was thinking of some of tonneau or rigid (plastic / ply) to keep things mainly dry and out of view and then for the rear of the cab I was going to use either ply or ply and polycarbonate but still weighing things up as it will need to be sealed but with the option of opening the window right up in summer ( whilst still keeping a degree of security)

So any ideas or similar attempts?

Cheers

evil73 did taking the top off and putting a rollbar and tonneau on change the centre of gravity much or is it still quite top heavy?
I have been thinking of doing this also

I reckon something similar to the first pic, but a fully enclosed soft top. Similar to how they often do it to 40 series. And the spare not on the roll bar, to keep CofG down.

You'd be suprised at how much lighter the cage and spare tyre are in relation to the frp top. The spare only lasted up there for a short time until i cut the back off the car. I did have some half doors on the back of the truck which i still have and my mate pauly made a tonneu cover up, he also did the soft roof and window. The truck has changed again since the last photos, now has 14" coilovers all round with a frame rear and flipped radius arm front so the truck handles completly different to a standard middy now as i have another middy that is stock and its like driving tractor in comparision to my comp truck.

I havent got anymore decent pics of his chop, but I know that he cut down the natural line that you can see running down in front of the rear windows. Then along the bottom line of the windows then just tappered it of at the back. He then made up a back wall just behind the front seats.
If you go onto the sites that have 8 day and extreme winch challenges you should find more pics of it.
http://www.qldwinchchallenge.com/index. ... &Itemid=67 there are quite a few good pics in here
Cheers.
Edit: It looks like he has now removed the pieces under the window as well.
Dave.

Thanks evil 73.

Sorry for the late reply.

If you are able to muster up some pics along with a build up report, I'd be very grateful.

Cheers

Is that James Compagnon's truck? Think it was also sitting outside the ARB store in Dubbo this time last year.

Either way, would like to get a better look at the join of the B pillar and the new C pillar.

Would you have any close up pics?

I'm here every now and then I guess... Not often though... lol
I don't really have any good pics of the work that was done but I am about to start cutting it down and re-doing some of it all over again.

Where abouts are you located mate?

Rookie has picked himself up another FRP Top (Roof Only - My old one) and he has already started cutting it down. He lives not far from me also so once again - Where abouts are you located... lol...

Sweet as Guys, we've found another Brisbane owned Middy... lol
Well 'apparently' it's close enough... ;-)

See you on the next Brisbane based road trip, or 'off' road trip.

I agree. It is not far. I drive down there and back every week. And that is from the sunny coast, Bris northern suburb. Lol.
