Ok, Ive got another project in the works, this time I need some information regarding the adaption of a Vitara Auto to Sierra tranfsercase. Im initially researching the idea, havent found much yet but would be keen to see any piccies or information regarding an adpater plate shutting off the Vitara Auto with some sort of flange type setup for a mini propshaft leading to a Sierra transfercase.

i know of people mating a vit transfer to a sierra transfer (twin transfer setup) but this is a really long drive line I dont think it fits the stock swb wheelbase. tail shaft on big angle? and it put the shifters way back in the trans tunnel.. (unless you are increasing wb)
as for straight to sierra im not really sure.
but best bet i reckon would be to pull the gearbox out and grab a vit auto and see what lines up/what doesnt...
u can get one cheap as chips as people buy the vit frontcuts and dont want the autos.

The dual Hilux transfercases behind the Vitara auto are a heap of shit when driving on the road. As they offer no gear reduction in high range, tyre size is limited to 30" standard zook tyres. Therefore the Hilux cases will be taken out and replaced with more useable gears of the Sierra transfercase. I have to get an offset Bunderra diff for the rear aswell, the V6 forerunner diff is too wide aswell.
I heard about this adapter plate from the back of the Vitara Auto and wanted to see if anyone had any piccies or information regarding it.

I have seen the 4paly kit which is what I will getting soon (next two weeks)
Its basically replaces the extensionhousing with a bearing carrier and bearing
A mount is also attached to this
You bolt the transfer straight up with no jack shaft
Pretty tidy kit
As far as I know it's only for the three speed

i made a adaptor to suit the vitara (holden trimatic) 3 speed auto.
it uses a shortened sierra jack shaft.i ran this in the mud4b for just over a year with no vibration or any problems.
have the whole setup, adaptor plate for gearbox, 3 speed auto (in very very good cond, shifter, adaptor for sierra case, jack shaft, flex plate and torque convertor. everything you need to put the 3 speed onto a sierra or jimny 1.3 and hook a sierra t-case onto it.
keen for a swap for the duels?

Just to refresh your memories, I have a 1.6ltr mpfi Vit` motor and 4sp auto in my LWB sierra. Does this adapter fit my 4sp auto

Only going by what I have told so I am probaly wrong as usual
The 'fourth gear' is actually a torque convertor lock up
Theoretically without the convertor lock up connected its just a normal thrre speed
This being the case the adaptors should fit

Are the the actual old trimatics made by Suzuki rather than Holden (ie Holden sold the tooling to Suzuki)
If so will the trimtic shift kits fit straight in?
Manual valve body would be nice

Nope, three speed vitara autos, which are, indeed a GM product, (and have a GM ID plate on them) are totally different to the four spped auto, an Aisin Warner product. Apparentlym, they were actually made under license by pugeot! (Go figure!)
The four speed auto does, actually, have four speeds and a torque converter lockup.
CJ and MightyMouse on this board have more knowledge of these autos than I do, but they are totally different to the trimatic
The output shaft of the vitara trimatic has the same spline count/diameter as the sierra slip yoke so it is very easy to make a "short" tailshaft housing for this auto. I have not tried this with a 4 speed but I have seen a couple done and they were pretty short.
I can see no reason to solidly bolt a sierra transfer to the back of a vitara auto or manual, and if you wanted to do it the best way would be with an OTT kicker IMHO.There are too many issues associated with mounts, case strength and misalaignment to make this a worthy job - much better to use a jackshaft IMHO and mount it like a sierra.
the trimatic core is the same as any other trimatic - it just has a vitara specific case and output/input shafts so yes, a manual valve body will work as will all other shift kits and beef ups, but there are a couple of issues with the manual valve body -
There is no reverse pattern valvebody avilable for the trimatic, so shifting is a pain as you have to manually shift R,N,3,2,1 so for maneuvering off road neutral is next to 3rd and you have to pull third and second every time you go through neutral to reverse and vice versa. Obviously, it makes a ratchet type shifter a real PITA as there is alot of ratcheting to do even three point turn.
Secondly, when manual valve bodies are installed, compression braking is typically disabled making the gearbox totally useless at descending - on overrun it is like it is in neutral. way bad for control.
The gearbox people I have spoken to have said it "might" be possible to retain compression braking with the manual body but there is no reverse pattern.
PS- Fool_Injected - I think you might be getting some of your tech from the states, where the vitaras used a TH180 and TH200 - these are not trimatics OR Aisin warner AW4's and the TH200 is effectively a tH180 with an extra ratio and no torque converter lock.

So have you driven it yet? does it vibrate? and is that oil leaking or just spilage from install?

i have a trimatic that came in a sierra i brought and wrecked it was matched to a holden 202 with a "under drive" attached to it then a flange same as wide track ready for a short shaft to transfer if any one is interested its for sale.
question.... is the bell house pattern on a holden trimatic the same as vitara trimatic ???

Not sure about the bellhousings
The core of the three speed Vitara is a Trimatic
(ie: GM inners and Zook case)

Bellhousing, tailshaft housing (transfer adapter) and output shaft are unique to vitara. Core is common with any other trimatic.

shoulda kept the lux cases ....it will never defy gravity with a zook case .....
.I may be half pissed ...but this totally cracks me up ...way back in the begining you turn up with your mem's thread saying this rig will do this that ,fawkn everything best thing since sliced bread , just how bling everything is including bagging other zook auto to lux adaptors (OZ and U.S) ......then it all turns pear shape and you bag the work of the original place .....now you turn to get extra work done @ another place 4x4 specialist's ,,,(gaymie way
) ...and now you are vertially ... well you are redesigning the rig ......... of which wAS GUNNA blow everything away even purpose buit tube buggys .......
even with your worth of 4wd experience ....beeen there done that the best motto.....
so what happened to the air BAGZ .....defying gravity and so forth ...
best PAULINE voice ......please explain
PS I realise the change to get road km's reduction but wouldnt some 1 of your nature that has more experience ...than most already know that the lux case was never gunna cut the mustard on road
And you are now going to use parts from a distributor after you have already bagged his other work way to go BENT

I kinda remeber your members thread and I just read this one, would it be easier to keep the lux duals and change diff ratios?
So are you going back to the zook case as it under driven on road?
I understand this as road speed is important to me too
Why not go vit auto with transfer plus seirra case, then you would have both, twin cases with underdrive on road. mmm I love to dream.

Just to clarify,
Quote:now you turn to get extra work done @ another place 4x4 specialist's ,,,(gaymie way )
Marcus has been to my workshop and has asked for advice on a few bits and pieces,But to date i have not seen his rig or done any work on it.
Not to say that marcus may decide to bring his rig to me in the future to have some work carried out.
But just clarify as to not confuse anyone, i have not worked on this rig like you are saying..
Regards
Jamie
