Welding off diff gears

help please

myself and a couple of mates bought a 82 VH commodore for a charity bash. We want to weld the diff but we don't want it to break. The bash will be over 4 days 90% dirt road.

Has anyone had any experience with the diffs in this car. its only a 202 blue with a 5 speed box and from what i can gather 8 bolt salsbry diff.

how strong are the axels

not really a 4x4 question but it will help the car go through the 4x4 tracks a bit better

What you really want is a 10bolt LSD diff.
Heaps stronger and practicaly locked the LSDs are pretty tight.
I have one for sale but Im on the wrong side of the country :)

just weld the spider gears together and then the carrier, you can weld pieces of metal between the gears for more strength if you want. id advise to get some spare axels and a centre (pre welded ofcourse). iv seen these diffs last a few months in a 253, but with the big block 202 you never know what could happen :D .
mq shorty, black, rust free!!, quarter chop, F&R tube bars and sliders, q78's or 33'' stt's, 4.88's with lsd waiting to be thrown in.. :D http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9540

Just remove the carrier from the housing, remove the crown wheel and wash with some degreasre or similar and blow out with air, I use a mig personally but wont matter

Don't split the carrier.......Start welding through the inspection holes, trying to get as far in as possible..... spider gears to cross shaft, spider gears to side gears, side gears to carrier....just start at the deepest possible point and work out, then don't stop until its near full

Any other methods of welding diffs ARE crap :finger: tacking spider gears, removing spiders and welding side gears to carrier etc.....are just utter shit

All methods have been used in mine/mates cars which all get hammered and this is the only one that's proven its worth.......Last one I did was 8 months ago in a VP and has travelled around 15,000 as a daily driver, and hasn't been an issue.....car parks and all....although he no longer tows boats :oops:

But you will break an axle or CW&P at some stage, just if you wel it properly you WONT break the centre :armsup:

agreed!
just pull the centre out and weld the faRk outa it.. :lol: wash it with degreaser first then use an oxy to heat up the area you are going to weld, this will remove the film of oil that has been left behind from degreaser. then mig er up. make sure you get penetration into the spider gears to the cross shaft and you should be right.

axle will break for sure!
