Lost 5th gear with 35" tyres on

Hey guys, my name is Lee and I am new to the forum. I have a 92 V6 4runner with 35" claws on it. The problem is that I have lost 5th gear on the hiway. What diff gears should I put in to bring back 5th gear. It's a daily driver and I was thinking 4.88. Any help would be great.

dont know much about your car,
but if you can tell me what size tyres is standard on the car as well as the stock diff ratios, your new ratio can be calculated

My guess would be your running 4.1's or 4.3's.
Check out
www.toyotatasurf.asn.au and browse the forum . You will get all the info you need to work out the right ratio you need to run.

I have 4.56 gears in my Diesel Lux with 35s and it turns them OK but I reckon 4.88s would be the go.
What ratio do the V6 runners have from standard?

Great tech
for a 4runner then. All the vehicles you have refered to have different ratio and motor characteristics, and are not really much help.
Layto....

X2 on what Layto said......
4.88's would be the go. I wouldn't waste my dollars having anything taller than that. You can get 5.24's but i think they may be overkill for 35's unless it's just for comps.

I think it came out with 4.33 diff gears and it has 31" tyres. Next question, does anyone know how much and where I can get diff gears from. I'm in Adelade. Thanx guys.

Get 4.88's, that should bring the gearing and speedo back to normal.
Keep an eye on the forsale section here and over at
www.toyotasurf.asn.au as they periodically come up forsale.

35" tyre is 12% larger (in diameter) than your original 31" tyres. 1.12 x 4.33 (orig diff ratio) = 4.84 The closest to this is 4.88:1......that's your answer!

Thanx Dan and bee bee, at least now I know that 4.88 are the right diff gears to get. I'll also keep an eye on those two sites you mentioned dan.

I had a V6 'Runner before the Prado, stock tyres were 30", and the stock ratio for the V6 was 4.33
I'd agree with the 4.88's for sure.

you dont need to change diff gears on an 80 or a real patrol to run 35's
but on a 4runner definatly need gearing or a 1uz:P

Dirty Harry on this forum has a 2.8L Diesel Hilux (no Turbo on it) and runs 35's, he has 4.88's in it to get the ratio's back to standard.

hello 4x4 wannabe i have a set of 2 x 4.88 and 2 x 5.29 to suit hilux, i think surf inderpended is still same center as rear some one here could clarafie that, either set $450 the pair there complete centers with single spinner etc..
also i wouldn't disregaurd the 5.29 to quickly, as a surf may not have the turque to push the 35's and 5.29's may help here, the revs may be up but your foot would just be feathering the throttle, wear as smaller gears lower revs but more peddle to maintain the speed ie more fuel as you have found buy loosing 5th if you where to use 5th now your foot would be flat to the floor and the car going no where, with the 5.29 you'll be reving at 2300-2400 at 100ks. 4.88 = 2100-2200 at 100ks , 4.3 = 1900- 2000 at 100ks assuming 5th gear is .75-1 overdrive and hi range is 1-1 you need to find where your torque starts and choose a ratio that lines up to that rpm at a 100ks allowing wind restistance etc.. i would think the 5.29 are the go with 35's best of both worlds
also still waiting to find out about that soft top for your dads vitara, if it'll suit etc i have posted it on the nbs suzuki club site no replies as yet but i will let you know as i do want to sell it

Negative, rear is very different from front on an IFS.

Thanx rama, I can't do anything right now about the diff centers but if you still have them when i can do something then i will probably take them off you. I will wait to hear from you about the soft top. Thanx mate you have been a huge help.

Formula for determining gear ratios
1) Effective Gear Ratio:
The effective gear ratio illustrates the changes that occur when larger tires are installed. For example, by replacing 29 inch tires with 33 inch tires, your 3.54:1 axle ratio will perform like a 3.11:1.
Divide the old tire diameter by the new tire diameter, then multiply by the original ratio. This will equal the effective ratio of the new combination.
2) Equivalent Ratio:
This formula is used to find the axle ratio needed to bring the overall tire/axle ratio gearing back to an approximation of stock after you have installed larger tires.
divide new tire diameter by the old tire diameter then multiply by the old ratio. This will equal the new gear ratio.
Hope this helps
Hoppy

to throw anothe spanner in the works...
I have a RN105R lux (22R) running 35's and comes std with 4.88's. Seems OK on road but offroad in low range with 6psi in beadlocked 35's she really boggs down and find it tough going to turn them for example once they stop turning on a steep hill or deep bog hole. Just though it somehting to consider.
If i was going to persist with the lux it'd be 1uz and 5.29's for sure - SEE FOR SALE SECTION

2.8 diesel with aftermarket turbo, it overtakes ok, at least as good as a standard lux does at 100kmh.

Hey ramma, the ifs diff on a 4runner is totally different to a hilux live axle. Would you be willing to sell the rear 5.29 only and if so how much?

I'd prefer to sell them as a pair $450 but I'll sell 1 for $280 most wreakers are better part of $500 each ive no answer for that soft top either rude bastards i'll try auszookers.com they might be more help full
