i ve got 84 hilux with a 2.4 diesel, the radiator was a seive so i threw it out. i would like to put a bigger radiator in so it runs a bit cooler, it would sit at about half, is that normal ?. i want it to run cooler because after i put it on the road, im going to supercharge it.

will a 2.8 radiator bolt strait in, and will the hoses line up? or is there another bolt in option?

The 2.4 radiator is the largest you will find and is more than adequate to cool the motor - the cooling problem lies elsewhere. Get a standard 2.4 core in good condition from the boneyard (or a newie) and replace the viscous silicone fluid in the fan hub. Go to Toyota and buy 2 ampules of silicone fluid, crack open the fan hub, drain it thoroughly (but do not wash it with any type of degreaser) a hair dryer may help the old fluid to drain out, squeeze the new fluid in and reassemble. Get a fan shroud from the wreckers for your motor and radiator and your cooling problems will be solved, provided you have a clean (as in cooling/ water jacket) motor and it is not overfuelled to the max. If you are worried about actual temperature, buy a mechanical temp guage from supercheap. Remove the dash temp guage sender from the thermostat housing, and put it in the block drain plug hole (on the injector pump side of the block) place the new guage sender in the thermostat housing and you are set to accurately monitor temps.
