freeway fuel consumption - trip done

Just wondered if anyone could give me a rough idea of how much fuel my Rangie would use to go to melborne from sydney. trying to work out cost as I'm doing trip next weekend.

Rangie is a 88 model EFI 3.5L, ZF Auto running stock diffs and 235/85 R16 BFG all terrains with a 2" lift.

My fuel guage reads abit low so have only take it to 62L used, they hold 75L don't they??

It will have 4 people and overnight gear (weekend trip) and be travelling 800kms each way.

they should take 80L

and taken wear and tear and the age of the motor into account I would do your calculations on 20L/100K to be safe.

I think my freeway consumption in the 3.9 ZF with 245/75/16 MTRs is about 19 L/100K

Give a guess on a 4.4 lt Bored out to 5lt. With 4 speed manual. in a old 2 door rangie. with 33 in tyres...

K`s to litre???????

If you cruise I'll reckon you'll come in under 4 tanks with premium <$400

94 V8 3.5L Disco last year, loaded to the gunnels, cost us near enough to $450 there and back. Thrashing it though!

Yeah I was going to calculate on 5 tanks. I'm not planning on flogging it, but would like to sit on 110kph all the way (give or take hills) and with the extra tyre size letting the motor rev abit less was going to help except for up hills.

Also when the fuel light comes on how many kms or Litres are left? My guage only goes upto halfway between full and 3/4 when the tank is full, so hard to know when I'm about to run out.

Any pointers for making them run any better, I've disconnected the cold start injector as it was running rich with it hooked up, any other common probelems? My air filter doesn't have the very end snot on it, can't see that making much of a differance cold air wise.

Don't get me wrong I'm not expecting good consumption but I don't want it drinking rediculous amounts of fuel. it's worth the comfort and the ease of driving than any other car I could take. 5 tanks there and back would be good.

My guess (based on my 85) is about 16 litres remaining.
Enough to do about 100km on a petrol V8.

Which strangely enough is a similar range to my japanese car when the fuel light comes on (8 litres, about 100km's worth).

Yep, all sounds about right. I've got a tired old 3.5 in my '88 Rangie. I travel to and from Sydney and Newcastle regularly. It will use about a 1/3 of a tank on average to do it one way which is about 150 k's. 1/2 tank if I'm laffy (daffy) on the throttle or about a 1/4 if I'm nice and steady. About 100 k's when that little orange light come on. I get 200 to 250 miles (private import :roll: ) to a tank usually.

Well the trip has been done and i'm pleasently suprised and very happy with my Rangie. It didn't miss a beat all trip.

There were only 2 people and weekend gear and tools etc. Car didn't get flogged but we didn't do a slow trip. Rev's were at 2000rpm most of the trip (except up hills of course)

Here are the results. My speedo is out due to the tyres been 235/85R16

Trip from Winston Hills (Parramatta) to Kilmore (Vic)

My speedo: 731kms
Actual Kms (roughly): 804.1kms
Fuel used: 110.32L
Average speed: 105 - 110kph
Fuel consumption: 13.72L/100kms

Return trip from Kilmore to Smithfield

My speedo: 711kms
Actual Kms (roughly): 782.1kms
Fuel used: 107.95L
Average speed: 105 - 110kph
Fuel consumption: 13.8L/100kms

The whole trip there and back cost me $262 in fuel

Just did it in my stock disco 98 model V8 from hampton park vic to kellyville and back and got 14.5l/100 on average

Good going in the old rangie

Have you thought about Chev V8 Diesel 6.2L I've been driving Range Rover 1979 for 5 years with Chev V8 Diesel 6.2L made 14.3 litre/100km/h (old motor Rover EFI V8 3.5L 20.6L/100km/h) but Diesel always change oil least 5000km very important.
I drove from Brisbane to Kilcoy Land Cruiser Mountain Park 1/2 tank (trailer with 4 spare tyres 35inch, tent, tools box, water tank and 2 jerry diesel 20L x2) when it's last day on the way home almost empty)

Are the rules on diesel swaps the same as petrol, ie you effectively need the motor to be newer than the car for pollution gear reasons?
