Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Just wondering how many guys out there use these headsets...whether it be in winch comps, or rock-crawlin comps.

I have made a vest style harness system that holds the unit in place, and eliminates the need to attach it to your helmet. There will be about 5 sets of these vests running around at the Outback Challenge, and just putting the feelers out to see who else would be interested.

The vest is worn under your shirt and is made from a PVC coated mesh and canvas. The majority of it is mesh though to enable airflow.

I will post some pics up tomorrow if anyone is interested.

more interested in these systems, whos selling them? or any website imfo? if i had some i may be very interested in your harnesses

Pete at OPW sells them about $1000 but worth every cent we use them in the tuff truck etc Give him a call.

They are damn good!
We use them when competing in the Firebug at OZrock and WErock.

The biggest benefit is you can have a normal conversation.
Sure beats yelling where that itself makes the adrenaline rise and the driver or spotter more stressed out

You don't have to buy the roundeyes either...

i wouldnt say they are the best option (still a very good one) my setup seems to work much nicer! especially with the water resistant bluetooth headsets and the 10hrs talk time!!

I have sent Peter Antunac a set, which he will be using at this weekends round of Werock.

I will also post pics up tonight of the vests, and let you know the prices.

There are of course other options, but for those who are not skilled with modifying house phones/mobiles, the Eartec/Roundeyes option is the go.

The house phone option does give a greater range - about 300m or so compared to about 100m max with Eartec/Roundeyes, but how often are you going to be 300m away from the rig you are spotting for?

There are of course other options, but for those who are not skilled with modifying house phones/mobiles, the Eartec/Roundeyes option is the go.

The house phone option does give a greater range - about 300m or so compared to about 100m max with Eartec/Roundeyes, but how often are you going to be 300m away from the rig you are spotting for?

best bet is wait till the Aus version are made better ans no potenial fines

When Optus or whichever telco has its nickers in a knot has coverage out in the areas that the comps are held, then it will be a problem. Until then, I personally think that any threat of fines etc is a load of bs.

Now im not knocking the round eye or eartec kit as i think they are fantastic as an off the shelf set up but there has been many times that me and Wes were more than 100mtrs apart either watching seperate courses between stages or one watching a course while the other is repairing a vehicle. To me distance is very important.

And Gregs blue tooth kit is nothing like the kit i used. It is very simple and not modified anything like the house phone system either I or Roger used.

If your looking for a kit that straight out works then go with either the round eyes or eartec. But if your switched on and want a better set up then go blue tooth.

Didnt really want this thread to be turned into a "which com unit is better" thread...but ya get that on OL.

Anyways...heres some pictures of the vests.

The cradle part of the vest could be made to suit any radio that uses headsets...so its not just for the Round Eye systems (just they have been the only ones I have had to make these for).

Great Idea The only issue I can see that may arrise is that we tend to pack a shite of rocks some of which are quite large ....when we,ve had our wheaties ) it may get damage normally a heavy rock requires it to be carried against the chest /abdoman area .....it does look like it sits pretty high ...though so it may be no worries at all ....


I'm thinking(as you mentioned in your initial post) of trying to mount it to my helmet(spotter) up outta the way ( until I go arse over ) ....just a thought ......

and for driver will it be in the way of the harnesses??? .....

maybe a velcro latch or similar over the top to stop em falling out when your running round bending over picking up and stacking rocks etc.

otherwise they look neat.

The radio unit sits pretty much on your chest plate.

As for the "in the way of the harness" query...it doesnt seam to be...a few guys in the winch challenge comps are using them and havent had a problem in that regard.

Just a thought...Does the navi/spotter ever have to be in the buggy whilst competiting? I was thinking maybe for the buggy/rockcrawling guys that one vest (navi/spotter) could have the radio cradle on the back (to avoid the rock problem). But that would make things very uncomfortable if you have to be harnessed in the buggy.

trust me...they dont fall out.

looked at doing a flap over the top...but with the 'channel selection' buttons on the top it may cause dramas with the buttons

I don't think it will get in the way as long as it is quite high up.
The smaller rocks are carried lower down as they are easy to manage and you usually check them around.

The larger they are the harder they are to lift high onto your chest.

Maybe make it so it can be reversed front to back so everyone has the option

This pic sort of shows what I mean.

I would be pretty confindent that the radio unit would not be affected...as you said the heavier the rock, the harder it is to lift that high.

But the reversal idea is possible, so theres an option for anyone to consider.
