wondering how easy it is to do the piston rings on the GQ TB42,
she been very bad on blowing smoke, and losing compression
iv been told to hold off picking up standard rings just incase its bored out

also would doing the p-rings,and vrs kit and a carbie kit help out on feul consumption????

cheers matt

carbie kit would help with chewin juice, ur better off gettin the vrs kit seeing that the head and manifolds have to come off to do the rings, even if u dnt use the valve stem seals, unless there is a big price diffrence, 4.5 litre cruiser motors the valve stem seals are worth gold. since u are goin to all that trouble to do the rings may aswell do the bigend bearings aswell

There's a mob in Brissy who import low k Jap engines and give warantee.

They have TB42's in stock, I think somewhere around $2,000 for the motor complete.

I would be going down that path. Rebuild would be worth more than the car from a Mechanic.

yah i just got a second hand low k's motor of here. They come up every now and then.

Or pull the thing apart and whack new rings in. Its only nuts and bolts lol (term used loosely haha)

Would this be fitted??
Also have they got more HP than the standered motor?

aaah. no

as it says. thats a used low klm engine. stock standard. plus fitting.

unless you can rebuild it yourself your better off get a 2nd hand motor and wack it in. they are near bullet proof anyway. its mainly poor maintenance that kills them.

cheaper to do rings for me,
trouble is youll spend more rebulding it if you do it properly. head check, vrs, rings, hone, big ends, mains, clutch etc etc..

2k is nothing really, people spend that on a head port and polish.if you rebuild it you may spend more, you might spend less. depends on who youknow or what you can do your self i spose. its a fun process but can get costly. all comes down to what you want, cheapest option is too get a 2nd hand motor. they have been on here for 600-800, low klm and complete

:D

if your keen to do, id say go for it, $2000 is pretty steep for a used motor, they say low ks, but they will tell you anything to sell em. motors dont come with odemeters like whole cars, so you are at the sellers mercy. even if it costs $2000 to fully rebuild it properly. at least then you know for sure its a fresh motor that will last the distance.

piston rings $55
big ends $40

pistons $300
timing chain $12
mains $40
full gasket $200
cam bearings $18

it cost me, doing all the work myself
$700 for parts including welch plugs , and consumables oils etc
$800 for machining incuding grinding cam and lifters, machining flywheel and rebuilding head, grinding crank , boring block , fitting cam bearings and fitting pistons.
all up including a good clutch kit $400 and beer

it would have cost $2000
