Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I have a mate with a Nissan Patrol which has a 6" coil lift, no BL and 35" tires. All bought parts no 'I made it myself' parts. He currently lives in Sydney and is planning on moving to QLD sometime this year. He asked me the other day if he'll have problems re-regesitering it in QLD. It isn't engineered yet, but would it be worth engineering it prior to moving or do it in QLD - or not doing it at all (if he can get away with it)

Any help would be great, I'll pass the info on!

search this topic about QLD comes up nearly every day and has been covered so many times it is a joke

Short answer...no it will not be legal in qld, it can't be engineered and won't get registered (well probably-there has been some cases where the people behind the desk dont have a clue and an inspection not needed). If you want to keep the lift in then you'll have to first pass registration then just drive it and hope you don't get caught or have a crash where your insurance wont cover you.

I think he only threw away the shocks as they where stuffed. Everything else he's still got. I think he'll probably sell it... He's going to check with the QLD DOT today.

Ok I managed to call the QLD DOT and got put through to this guy who told me 2" suspension is the maximum you can go in QLD, however you can apply for a 2" BL through the DOT via a form. As for tires you can only go 15mm bigger than standard!!

I asked him why NSW was different and he said that the goverment are trying to bring the same rules in that QLD have in every state!!

Funny how even the DOT guys don't know the rules sometimes... The actual rule - as stated in the booklet - is that you are alowed to lift the suspension by 1/3 of the suspension droop.

The guy mentioned something similar but it was regarding the bump stops and 1/3 of the height. I hadn't had chance to read the PDF I just posted it up quickly so everyone else could read it. I'll print it off later and read it at home! It seems to me that most drivers get there 4x4 standard register it, pink slip it once in QLD then modify the crap out of it and take there chances.....

What he said means the same.

No pink slip - called a "safety certificate" - most people still call it a roadworthy. And yes, you are right in many cases, BUT - a lot of people also fit the legal maximum (2" BL and 2" suspension - so 4" total), then just keep the big wheels for the weekend. So when they have normal (+15mm) size wheels on the truck is 100% legal.

Actual rule is you are allowed to increase the bump stop travel (from bottom of bump stop to top of diff spring saddle) by 1/3 i am now going through DOT trying to clear my defect :( Everything else i have fixed has passed bar the height. Another thing most people wouldn't know is offset castor bushes are not legal and same with any adjustable panhard rod sold in Australia it ShortyIQ sucks but seem they have the final say.

a mate thats lives around the corner from me got done on sunday by a traffic cop in a D car, got him for tires and no front number plate (got ripped off 4wdin), the copper was a smart arse telling him that quote "you guys dont think we know these things do you" the cop even looked under the wagon. now the funny thing is, he had just put new springs in, 7"front 6"rear, and 2" body, the copper told him that the height was fine, go figure.

I did the one third on my spring before I got the new set because I was driving on the bump stop The total travel was 245mm.So a 3 inch lift would be fine for me it only went up 65mm which is o.k.I have bj 74 and it has 75 up the front and 60 series in the back on full cross up they are a finger thickness away from touching the bump stop and that is enough for me at the moment.

A guy at my work went up to fraser his mate has a 4wd 6inch lift/4inch body lift and real big tires.

an old cop pulled them at 8pm pitch black and he's asking them hey is this lifted 4inches max?

they answer yep!

he tells them well it doesn't loook it but I'll let you go with a warning then.

the rule is as ISUZUROVER said, however, it is generally accepted that 2" is the limit.
