Tow rig

As the 40 gets more and more modified it get less and less road friendly :roll:

So .............................. the time has come to look into a tow rig :D

What do I get ?

I was thinking along the lines of a GQ or an 80 series :?

Points for consideration:

a. Needs to be able to tow the 40 (Obviously :lol: )
b. "Reasonably" economical - diesel or petrol on LPG :?:
c. It needs to be pratical/comfortable as a daily driver for my wife
d. $15k limit

Anyone know of anything good for sale ?

GQ SWB, LPGV8 or TD, but YMMV

and biggest tyre a 31.

Gearing dude. I mean, you can run whatever size tyre you want, you just gotta change the gearing to match, and the SWB will have 4.1's, any extra ponies you have with the donk will be gobbled up needlessly by the choice of (useless in the case of a tow rig) larger tyres. But hey, if the budget allows, bling the heck out of it. With a $15k budget, you also want a reliable trailer and tow package on the rear.

What about if you get a turbo diesel and put like 33s on 16s on it?? I want it to look decent when im driving around! Although if thats a seriously big sacrifice then i might not do it!

see if you can get hold of an early 80 like 92/93 gxl petrol coverted to gas.

these things are insane to use as a tow car. i used my uncles gxl on petrol/gas to tow a 4 horse float with 4 horses and about 300kg of feed and it went up mt ousley in 5th @ 100kmh with out a problem.
plus you get all the pretty extras & comforts of a gxl.

Whatever I get will remain as close to stock as possible. There will be no 'bling' I'm afraid :lol:

Budget is for rig only. Extra $$$ set aside for trailer ;) Hopefully the rig I get will have tow gear already.

This was/is on my wish list ;) Definately in the top 100 :roll: So many choices ................................................ :?

on a related note how/where do people store a tandem car trailer. i have access to one (on my Dad's farm 5 hours away) but no where to store at my house. I take it you can't use a frames legally in Vic anymore , what about dolly setups ie a two wheel trailer which carries the front two wheels of the towed vehicle

I was speaking to Rob with the white vitara and he said you can A-frame tow a car so long as the towing car weighs 3 or more times the weight of the towed car... He is going to be towing his vitara behind a motor home setup. What does the patrol weigh?

Question is, does the 3x weight factor refer to the TARE weight or the GVM weight of the tow vehicle?

Extra weight of the cement/camping gear may reduce the weight you can flat tow.

True, but on the other hand - you could remove stuff off the sierra because you won't actually be driving it there... i.e. run it on an empty tank of fuel, put all recovery gear in the patrol, remove doors etc... do anything required to make it as light as possible i reckon...

that's the thing with towing it, don't need to take things like full doors, camping equipment etc in the Sierra. Maybe I should finally do a soft top body swap on it?

Would it need to be road worthy etc as it would be running on swampers could that be an isssue i wonder?

Sorry for the thread hijack, look at a patrol LWB as they are plentiful and you can get a stock one for a good price.

buy a bedford van, 350 on gas and plenty of room in the back for a disco ball and wall to wall velvet. You can even get the porthole windows with a demister for those late nights on the roadside after a comp.

a mate has a V6 jackaroo (3.2? 3.5? litre) which he uses to tow his rally car+spares+tools+++, it was buckets cheaper than a similar age/km 80 series or patrol and does the job pretty well.

I normally wouldn't wish a jackaroo on anyone but they make a pretty good tow rig if that + malling is all it needs to do. the 3 litre turbo diesels are also excellent but oibviously more pricey.

my van is hellava fast!
been thinking bout this too, i always wanted an 80 series. and when my 45 is ready for comps id rather not conserve my car because of the drive home.

Seriously the jabber dumbdunce suggested is a good idea, comfy, roomy and smooth (ifs) for a good price. As long as the towing capability is there you would be a happy man with a wad of cash to spare :D
