repairing diff covers

Hi there just wondering whats the best approach......I 've got a small crack in the crownwheel cover that I want to repair then I'll make some guards so it can't happen again
p.s its for a range rover

did you hit a rock or did it shit a spider gear?
pull the centre out, panel beat flat, then heast the small area with an oxy to remove the fillm of oil. just heat it from the outside, then mig it up then either grind flat or if you get a nice weld leave it alone.
