air intake mods

So I'm looking at getting better airflow into the air cleaner when I have a week off next week.
Is there an easy way to modify my current air intake with a hacksaw or the like that will get me some decent airflow without having to worry about getting a shitload of mud in my filter next time I go out an play?
I've considered putting a snorkel in but I don't want to be bothered with going to that much effort. If I did it would probably be a bonnet scoop that could be spun 180 degrees when it's play time.

how come you need more air flow ?? you can try and make the hole bigger that goes into the guard, assuming that it does like mine, and then just getting some bigger pipe to fit the hole .. other than that cutting a hole into the side would let way to much shite into the filter

I figure with better airflow the engine will have a bit more power.
The design just looks like it's a bit of a runaround going from behind the headlight into the guard then back around behind the headlight then into the air box.

The air flow depends from the air filter -not from anything before it. If you buy a more "free" like K&N you have what you want. My humple opinion although, is that you must not expect any serious differense. If you give an engine better air flow, you need a better flow from the other side (exhaust) to see a real change.

I have a 3" aftermarket cat-back exhaust and hope to get extractors at some stage.
The main thing is I've heard good things from people running snorkels and want to get the same sort of benefit. I might just try some temp arangements with some hose and zippy ties and see how much better it runs.

Mmmm... The snorkel thing is a big question to me. I want one but i've heard good and bad opinions. Many people say that has the effect that you mentioned. Other (also many) say that this is true only for some trucks (i.e. Land Rover) and generally they are not so good because a snorkel extends the air intake too much. Who is right? Perhaps a guy from this forum can tell us his experience on Pajeros. I'm very interested as i had a snorkel in mind after a small "bath" last weekend
Cheers

If you extend the air intake, you need to go up in pipe size as in my experiance the same pipe extended increases drag and thus restriction.
Also avoid convoluted pipes if possible

Yeah, but what about your experiences? Is there any benefit in performance?

No effect on my 3.0 V6 lwb 5sp with 4.88's & 31"s (also had a Finer Filter).
A tad more induction noise (as it was next to the driver's pillar) that may give the impression of better performance.

Didn't notice any performance change.
The standard intake is pretty short, just from the air box and into the guard. There is a little short piece of pipe behind the RH head light which looks like the intake buts its not, take the indicator out, look in there and you'll see what I mean.
