Outer Limits 4x4 Board

yeah i know they have a rep of being as weak as piss, but has anyone had any experience with one failing? not bearing failure, but shaft/gear failure? Thinking of putting one behind my isuzu 110, so it would be under a bit of torque.

can you engage them on the run, like the pommy electric GKN?

Also does anyone have one laying around they would sell, suit 4 speed rangie, working or broken?

I had one in a Rangie long ago.
Its unlikely the major brearings will fail as they are Rover LT95.
I think the gears are also rover.
They are synchro so you can change at any speed.
BUT
When I bought mine it had a gone ( completely) thrust washer and the needle bearings between the inner and outer shaft were shot and the machining on the outer shaft was "brinnelled".
These seem to be fragile , but you can get needle rollers with an outer race which are the same ID/OD.
I had a friend run up a new thrust washer.

After a couple of years it would jump out of gear,when the car was in 1st /low range ,overriding down a hill and the Fairey box in low.
I never worked out whether it was the Fairey or play in the gearbox main shaft but it could be scarey at times.

With the Isuzu I think you will have problems with thrust washers and needle bearings , even if you use it only as an overdrive in 4th high..

A friend had one on the back of a 3.6 Isuzu LR and broke the overdrive case.
He thinks that maybe one day he will use whats left to make an underdrive.

Was that an LT95/Rangie fairey or a series fairey - they are completely different animals.
