Outer Limits 4x4 Board

i just picked up a new snatch strap the other day and it features an anti recoil feature. As most straps break at the stitching, the anti recoil feature is attatched before the main stitching. Obviously it wont take the full weight of the strap if the stitching breaks, but is designed to slow the strap down and limit recoil. It is similar in theory to what they were writing about in the last issue of 4wd monthly. After recently having some recovery equipment break and the recoiling straps smashing into the back door of a mates 80 series and basically wrecking his door, it will be interesting to see how the anti recoil feature works. Not that i think my new strap will break in a hurry - it rated at 13000kg breaking strain.

I'm in the market for a new snatch.... after a similar incident with my last.... what brand is that one? $$$ and where from?

the 13000kg 25m strap was $260 inc GST. I also purchased a 8000kg 25m one for $145 inc GST. I am unsure how much a standard 8000kg 9m one would cost.

an 8000kg 9m strap range from around $55 - 90 depending on where you shop from what I have gathered... Just got a terrain tamer (8000kg 9m) won it in a raffle not sure what its worth yet, but it looks like its well made... yet to try it.... still looking at getting something nice and long like the above ones....

the long strap i got is actually made by commercial sewing. I found this out after i baught it (through a local rigging / lifting supply company). Maybe you could try contacting them direct and get some info and possibly a cheaper price. Here's their web address

I was the "young" engineer referred to in the 4wd Monthly article (Pat flatters me - I'm an old Bas&*rd). I was testing the load a recovery puts on the end of a strap during a snatch for an engineering thesis. Pretty $%$## scary - we found you could exceed the theoretical load (8000 kg) with some of the cheaper straps at around 11km/hr.

The rig was heavy, and we weren't sure if the recovery points would fail. I didn't want the test rig punching through the recovery vehicle, so a 1 m long 2 tonne lifting sling was rigged to the other recovery eye. This wouldn't help if the strap broke, but would stop lumps of metal from flying.

I tested 2 straps - a cheap one with a dark rodent on the label and a Blue and red one (3 initials, starting with A....) The cheap one failed half way through the test, fraying along its length. The other is still in use

I guess as an engieer you know what your doing .. but I have seen those "eyes" on the bars made by that (3 initials, starting with A....) company be ripped open resulting in a shackle doing several shades of damage to the tow vehicle .. To me they look a little flimsy for that sort of load .. hence the extra strap .. for your "protection"

Indeed - i don't think those points on the bull bar are rated at all - and are only designed for use with high lift jack... they are not designed for snatching from.

thats what i have always been told aswell, the eyes on the front of the bull bar are using your hilift jack with and you have propper recover points mounted on the chassis rails for snatching

The bar is a 4WD Equipment winch bar, made in Adelaide in the early 90's. The eyes in the front are substantiaslly thicker than the ARB ones, and will take a theoretical load of about 20 tonnes. I had to provide a full risk assessment for the Uni. I've seen the ARB ones tear out too. That said, they did suffer some damage from the repeated pounding of the shackle. We did about 120 recoveries over 2 very long days to get the data.

I knew there would be a good explanation ...

heard nasty things about lots of their kit, like their hand winches.. there was a 'recommendation' by the club in shitney not to use as some dude had a nasty experience at an akward time...
