As long as there are no burrs/scrapes on it , it will be OK.

You can use it but in my experience it will make your rope wear faster than if you use an alloy one. It seems to make the rope fluff up faster, which I thnk is due to the steel fairleads being more coarse against the rope. Personally I would spend the $100 and buy an alloy fairlead.

Can you get an alloy one made thats 14 1/2" wide ?
I've got a modded winch with a custom tube fairlead.
I have noticed the rope getting fluffy.

Yep know a few people out there with custom ones, but have to get them custom made, a bit more exy price wise obviously. I will ask someone I know who may do them and let you know, othgerwise there are a number of place that would have them, Mal Leslie for starters would be one.
Have also seen stainless rod used and seemed to work well. It was welded in an oval shape in place of the fairlead.
