whats the best liquid cleaner to flush out a gear box?
i thort either doesel or shellite.... but not sure weather either would have an effect on seals and gaskets etc...... any ideas?

A lot of years ago in another life when i was a farmer....the main gearbox on my header got water in it somehow....so i removed main transfer belt ....made up a mixture of 50/50 diesel and engine oil ....and let it run for a while at normal working speed with no load...till it warmed up . Then i give it a short quick change with gearbox oil ...drained that and refilled it. As far as i know this header is still going.

yeah not a bad idea

i had a road bike that used to suffer from slipping clutches i asked a mate at work who used to race 750 GP this is what he said to do "put 100ml of unleaded in with the engine oil go around the block a few times till it stops slipping then do a oil change"
it would last another 5000ks never got an oil leak either cheaper than new clutches and ive done the same to diffs and gear boxes ever sence when full of water/sludge some time need to do it twice to get it all out
works for me diesel may be safer

yeah cheers mate i recon diesel would definatlely be safer too

I've used diesel in diffs, trasfer case, and gearbox. Does a great job. I just drove slowly around the block, at about 10-15kph, for about 15 minutes, then drained immediately. The only thing it didnt shift was some sand and grit inside axle tubes.
