Upgrading from GQ to........ advice please?

Hi all!

I know this has been covered a million times but, I am looking to upgrade my current GQ TB42 as, I am afraid, she's a 89 Model and getting a bit long in the tooth.

I am looking around the $25,000 mark for the replacement and the requirements are 1999 Model at earliest, 100,000k's plus minus not much, manual and not a 3 Litre!

So, that leaves (from my research so far) a:
- 2.8TD
- 4.2TD (Although I feel that these are rare as the old hens teeth and probably outside my price range in the GU anyway)

Can anyone give me any tips? I have searched the 2.8 in this forum and seem to be some for and some against but, with a few sub 100,000 models around the $25 mark, it seems to be a good buy!

Any tips would be fantastic!

why would you consider a 2.8 but not a 3.0l :?
step backwards isnt it ?

3.0 are a good motor really, they perform bloody well in the navaras etc.
just buy a TD4.2 and youl be right. allthough people say the 3.0 are crap or what have you, ask someone who ownes one and get some reliable info. economy and maintenance or any problems.

now the 2.8 on the other hand. well thats a different story on its own

:D

GOLD , . I know the 2.8's are slugs but come on the 3.0 isnt that bad. more gearbox problems than the motors, not really an issue cause id go the 4.2 anyway but for those who do have a 3.0 they aren't that bad.

Have a mate who owns a GU 3 litre. He loved it........................................................................................................

Until it went Bang on the West Coast of Tassie and cost him a tow from Strahan to Hobart plus a new engine.

I just hear too many of these going bang.

The 2.8, I know, slug, but chip it, bigger exhaust and maybe some LPG Fumagation and she'll go ok and will hopefully do more than the 99,000k's my mates did before exploding.

Anything that has wear and tear is a ticking time bomb regardless. some just blow up before there use by date. :D .

there no comparing to the 4.2 but because they came out with the 2.8 and 3.0 well we have to aknowledge all the good and bad points about them both.

it depends on who you talk to but some operators have got a good run out of the 3.0 and some haven't, if maintenance or poor operating was an inssue for tha bombs, well who knows. things could be worst, they could have put IFS in the Patrols. :D

the 3 litre in the navara is a 4 cylinder not a 6 like the patrol.

edit: heard there was a period where if u whinged to nissan enough, they put a bigger sump in the 3 litre. can anyone confirm this?

get an 80 series saraha

The 3L in the patrol is a 4cyl also

The 2.8L is the 6 cyl.

the option you know you want to do is buy my 98 DX 4.2 diesel which just so happens to be for sale at this very minute. Just tell your wife the seats are cloth ST ones not the vinyl DX seats

why not rebuild the TB42, get the transmission overhauled and keep the GQ

I'm tossing up the same problem myself at the moment. Mines an 89 model too and I'm starting to think its better the devil you know than the devil you don't. Like you I was thinking $25k for a budget. I'm thinking I'll be better of spending some money $5-7k on the mav to get it up to scratch (paint, new steering box, body mounts, fresh springs and a general freshen up is all it really needs) and just keep on wheeling it. Mine is a td42 though so there is plenty of life left in her. ;)

I just noticed there is a TD42 engine for sale aswell, might be an option if your petrol is getting tired.

I'd buy a GU TD42 and put a turbo kit on it. Should be able to easily do this for less than 25k. I also wouldnt be too concerned about km if its a TD42.
