A mate has just got a RN46 (1985?)Hilux and wants to put 35" Mudzilla tyres on it. Its 18R petrol.
Will the stock gearing handle such an increase ?
RN-46R-KRQ
TRANS / AXLE L40 G142
Are L.S Diffs common or should he get a lockright?

the stock 4.10 gears will turn the 35's but it'll be very painful for your mate. he'd be better off swapping atleast 4.88 gears, 5.29's are reconmended though.
limited slip are crap. get a true locker.

yeh it will be slow off the mark and might ru away a little on downhills.
crawler gears might be worth looking at.
but ifits only a weekend toy, fawk it just drive it as is.

Even as a weekend toy, it will still be much nicer with lower gears.

Yep your right G142 = 8", 4.8, 2 pinion open.
You might also want to look at upgradeing the brakes, your 8" drums and solid rotors may find stopping hard.
Forget the Toyota LSD ther crap and last only 20' kms go the locker.

I had 35s on a 83 Lux with an 18R and 4 speed. Went alright but would only do 90kph on the speedo. So if speed is no concern go for it.
