I'll second the engine mounts, mine did the same thing also shuddered a bit reversing under load (ie uphill a bit) now all fixed.

I'll also go the engine mounts. I know mine are rooted, and it shudders as soon as it shuts down

this is true and helps, in my case!
Also it could be engine mounts depending how old they are or worn!

heres a little thought.. I might be way off here but my girlfriends old man had a TD42 and he complained that it sounded like it ran on for a split second after he turned the key off. So i talked to a few older mechanics that had been buggering around with diesels for many years. They suggested advancing the timing.. Run on on shudder stopped

Just my bits worth guys.. Plus nissans go heaps better with more advance,, petrol or diesel!!! Done my SD33T now the clutch slips : (

im not dismissing the engine mount coments but be aware that indirect inject motors always shudder when shut down

running on is a completely different thing but a shudder on shut down on an indirect inject is par for the corse.

agreed any older diesel will shudder when u stop it, it just the injection as said electronic ones stop faster than mechanical.

How do you do this, is it something that can be done yourself or should I leave it to a pro?

This has been covered before i think. It may be the fuel solenoid leaking past and allowing the motor to run a few revolutions longer and shudder to a stop. It does'nt happen every time does it? just now and then?

Agree with Henry........been told the same thing by a diesel engineer.

I can tell you with mine it wasn't the engine mounts. New genuine mounts made no difference. When I replaced the injectors, it pretty much stopped but still gives a little shake on shut down. Like was posted, this type of engine always gives a little shake on shut-down. Something more noticieble is run-on and is usually leaking injector(s). I assume that this is what was causing my to give a real good shake. I also had my IP rebuilt at the same time so can't say it was the injectors for sure.

Engine mounts, idle speed, pump timing...

if it keeps running after turning off the engine the offical term is called "dieseling" of all things.

Usually from the timing being a bit off and the diesel gets injected just after TDC forcing the pistion to keep going.

check the timing, idle on my diesel is 700rpm no A/C 850rpms with A/C.

from workshop manual.

i have mine idle at 600RPM cause i like having it low when 4x4ing, makes crawling with the stock gearing a bit better :)
