To go 5" or 7"? Your invaluable thoughts please

Im just after everyones opinion on what size lift i should go. Its between 5" or 7" utilising tough dog big bores, mega lift coils (probably) and snake dropped radius arms all to suit the lift. As well as all the other gear that comes along with doing it.
Its for a lwb GQ, that has no bodylift, that will only be used as a weekend toy and eventually do a few comps. It will also be getting X-linked not to long after the lift. It will probably be running 37's although maybe 35's. All the gaurds will be trimmed as needed.
So i would just like peoples opinions what they would do, which lift?
And is there a better coil to use than the megalift ones snake sell?
Anything is much apreciated,
cheers Ben

5" and trim the hell out of the guards and fit some 37's and twin lockers
No need for 7" if u wanna give it a try to fit big tyres..
Just my oppion..

Yeah im pretty sure it'll be running 37's most of the time....
The gaurds will be getting sliced as much as they need to be or is possible anyways...
Im probably leaning towards the 5" becaue of the lower COG. But wouldn't mind the extra 2" of travel from the 7".
Another thought i had, would it be wise to go a 7" lift and then try and get a hold of some pretty soft coils that would settle down probably 2" and give me the benefit of good travel. It doesn't matter how it drives on the black stuff....

Why don't u get coilovers? Or get 7" or longer shocks and 5" springs and retain the springs in u have low COG and heaps of travel..
ZOOK60 has done that go his springs clamped or welded in not sure and long a$$ shocks and his MWB flex's very well..

I had 7-8 dropped to 4 now 5". would not go to 7 again. too high, unstable, feels floaty. 5" Is perfect

x2, but stayed 4... you should go 4inch and if need be, go a body lift.
Dave T's dad has q78s on a lwb with 3inch lift, and a bit of grinding if I remember... you dont need mass lift unless your crusing Chapel st.

Yes my springs are retained but the shocks are only 8" travel its just the way they are mounted that i get more working length out of them.
I would go 5" if it is for a wagon or 4" for a swb

i say go 5 and reposition shouck mounts to maximise wheel travel, and retain springs,

Does anyone have pics of this repostioned shock mount??
THanks

The mounts have been cut off left moved to right side right to left etc .....has also been shortened (not the best pic some1 may have some close ups ....it was years ago I done this
I also modified my uppers .... ...one of the reasons was to get the driver/pass shocks at the same angle and to get the lower mounts as high as possible and still use all the shock travel

My GQ lwb has 37" Creepy's, and 2" bodylift, and 2" springlift, and 1" spacers. The springs have sagged a little now, but I trimmed the corners of the wheelarches, and it is fine. I fitted 1" spacers to the front shoch towers, to use longer shocks in the front, for extra droop.
With a full 4 or 5" lift, you may need to trim more, as your suspension will move a lot more than mine.
I wouldn't want to go any higher in mine, if anything, I may take the coil spacers out, and bring it a bit lower.

Cheers for everyones comments.
Im pretty much decided that im going to go for 5" and if need be throw my coil spacers in as well.
Ill also move the shock mounts as suggested and more than likely retain the Coils as also suggested (top and bottom?).
Im no afraid to get friendly with the old angle grinder to make the 37's fit.....
This will also men the X-link will be able to go in earlier too..... Should be good

definately retain the coils top and bottom, well my opinion anyway, i have done mine that way, and love it, i wasnt a fan of only retaining one end,
but each to their own,

Still running the same Bruce, And I only have 4" coils and a bit of trimming and run 36" Pedes.

How are the shocks mounted to increase Wheel travel. As some of the ways I have seen it done, make the car a flopy POS. The way I have seen is mounting the top of the shock close to the center line of the car. But this does not really allow the shock to do its job unless you had a really stiff shock.

I was going to reposition them to just give extra diff clearance under the back diff...
I will just get longer shocks to give it more travel......

like you said it all comes down to what shocks you choose, prob with really long shocks under a wagon is standard location gives no up travel, or if you wanna move mounts they will end up in tha cab,
i say, slant them in as much as you can and use a quality shock to dampen your ride,
ive slanted mine in as much as i can and it is great, but in sayin that mine is a ute, so its lighter than a wagon but i like my setup,

leave shocks std posisition n drop bump stops to run longer shocks, this has all been covered before in the last 2 months

you do not need any lift to fit 37's (If you have a wagon the rear will be a prob). Lifting more than you need to clear tyres is silly. If you need 5" all good. remember 5" starts to look pretty illegal!
