birfield c-clip grrrr

whats the best way to get these back on? Never done it before, just finishing knuckle rebuild. Get close then the birf slips back behind the inner hub. Oh and it's a solid axle hilux. Thanks.

Need some circlip pliers dude. Some guys I know use two screwdrivers but Im unco and It dont work for me

got some circlip pliers, still a pain in the ring though. Thought there might be a trick to it.
Can you leave them off? Seems to be a bit off in/out play, enough for the clip slot to go back behind the hub. If you can i'll be stoked.

I think your talking about the ring clip on the very end of the inner axle. I think pulux is talking about the clip on the outer end of the outer axle (birfield).
I use pliers to spread the clip, then stick a fat screwdriver sideways into the gap. Then really carefully slip it over the birfield. If it slips it'll spring off into a dark corner of your garage

Aah, ok. I was talking about where the shaft goes into the CV.

You know the hole inthe end of the birf/axle has a thread in it. Just get a bolt and screw it in. This allows you to easily pull the cv/axle back out. If you having helps of trouble just get somebody (even wife/girl friends can help here) to hold the bolt out while you try to get the c clip over the axle and into the grove.

If you dont have the right threaded screw you can use a screwdriver. I remember before buying my flat nosed circlip pliers, I used two screwdrivers, and even before that one smack with a hammer and she slid on there.

The bolt doesn't even need to be the correct thread as long as it grabs hold, it doesn't matter if its only in/on by 1mm as you only remove it again anyway. BTW you only put this bolt in with your fingers and only in 1 or 2 threads.

The bolt is also good for winching out broken CV's

yeah i had a bolt in there did help especially when the clip flew off it stayed on the bolt. Got em on just took a while with round circlip pliers. Just hope i don't break them CVs and have to do that again any time soon

Right size socket to start it then pull it out with pliers or bolt and push it on the rest of the way thats whats worked best for me. Yeah bolt is good for getting blowen cv's out even used it as a securing point for axle puller it was one tight bitch to get out

If your talking about the c clip on the end of the outer axle that is located inside the free wheelin hub then just screw a 8mm bolt in the end of the axle to keep it in place as you put the c clip back on.The plyers that you need for this are actualy called flag tip plyers.If your talking about the cir clip inside the birfield joint that is located on the end of the inner axle leave it of just mar tack the inner spline of the inner axle so that if the cv blows then the axle cant get pushed into the center of your diff

mar tack is so you can leave the circlip inside the birfield off. AFAIK.

I found to put the clip back on I put it at the end of the shaft the held it in place with a washer of the shockies and a bolt then levered it in to place with a couple of small screwdrivers, the clip is captive and can'twander off into a dark corner.
