hey,
Going by the calc my crawl ratio is 35.72 now with current setup as below. this is with 31's and 1.6 mpfi.
3.65 (1st gear) X 2.51 (1.0 transfer) X 3.9 (NT diff centre) = 35.72
I am considering getting some transfer gears and been looking at the lowrange offroad ones. 4.9.1's to bring it up to 62ish for crawl ratio.
I am considering going 4.6s in the diffs at a later stage also. $$ and gears pending.
Does this sound ok? Mostly be doing fire trails/beach work. and getting into more and more muddy and uphill climbs such as harvey/collie (WA people). also hwy driving is wanted 100/110 if possible.
I have talked to Dank running the 4,9s and 31s and reckons this is a good setup for majority of things.

what are you using to work out your crawl ratios etc try this link.
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/gearing.htm
remember 100ks in 62 miles and most over drives are about .75 - 1 and a suzuki transfer standed gears high range is 1.3 - 1 knowing this you can work any thing out from tyer size torpm and crawl ratio's etc.. good luck if you have a problem let me know

Nicbeer,
I guess this is the car you have that's currently being built? Personally, I would assemble it with the parts you have now and drive it before you get too carried away with the theory.
I think your car will be relatively light and will have plenty of torque and HP with the setup you are planning.
With the majority of your driving, I think that transfer gears might be more of a pain than anything- you will have a big hole between high and low and this will hurt in the sand.
Maybe shoot for the 4.6's with the 1.0 case. christover runs a fairly heavy sierra (LWB with a 90litre tank, spares etc) he runs a stock 1.3, 1.0 transfer and 4.88's and gets away with it on even the steepest victorian stuff. If he had a 1.6, it'd be the world.
If you go with gears, I would go with something in the 4:1 range and leave the diffs well alone.
Not really an answer, but some thoughts.

g'day nicbeer
when I said your crawl ratio was going to be around 62 it'll actually be a little higher. mine is 1.3 WT + 4.9 tranny gears + 3.7 diff gears which is 3.65 x 4.9 x 3.7 = 66.17.
yours would be 3.65 x 4.9 x 3.9 = 69.75 - pretty sweet for over here in victoria. but I reckon Steve's got a point that you might want to go a bit more user friendly and higher speed orientated gearing with the type of terrain you drive... but as a lot of people say lower gearing is always awesome as at some stage you'll want to do some slow technical work and when you do you appreciate the 4.9s.... there's always 3rd and 4th low...and even fifth but is probably a pretty weak gear....i try not to use it...

I know it's not quite the same, but my car:
3.1X6X4.1=76.26
my 4th low: 24.6:1
My 1st high: 3.1X1.55X4.1 = 19.7:1
I have 34's and I spend a lot of time in 4th low. My absolute top speed in low is about 23kph.
I think that around a 50ish:1 crawl would give the best balance with 31's
Here's some other ideas:
4.6 diffs only
3.65X2.55X4.6 = 42.8
4th low: 11.76:1
1st high: 26.0:1
Looks a bit tall in low range for my liking
or an old school 4:1:
3.65X4X3.9=56.94:1
4th low:15.6:1
1st high: 22:1
I think this would be ideal - there's some overlap with high range, and your crawl ratio will still make the steeper stuff pretty drivable with the EFI and 1.6.

Yep. the one i am building up. i do plan to drive it first. been going out on super hills latley and want to play on them as well.
I will see how it goes but yeh was looking at the 4.16-4.9s xfer gears. diffs were a afterthought at the moment.
as dank has said, i want to do more of the steeper stuff. dunes and beach there always is a higher gear. occ use low with the 1.3 and 31s on old rig for slow boggy stuff.
with the 4.1 u are talking about, this diffs or transfer?

Steve's talking about the transfer. Just to throw something else into the equation I have a set of 4.3 R&P's if you're interested.

ok I'm in the same boat atm
so I've been using
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/gearing.htm
with 0.795 being 5th , 1.638 being high range (not sure if i got it right
normal + 17%), 3.9 diffs
it was calculated that with road tyers as 31's going at 62mph ... I'll be doing 3412RPM
my question is that ok
its alittle high but its not in the 4000
any idea how much more fuel it will chew because of it?

I could be missing something here, but I don't think that is that much higher than stock??
If not, it still sounds pretty good to me.
Steve.
Out if interest, I just plugged my figures for all the parts I have hanging around ready to go into the hedgepig -
660 - 4:1 first gear (allowed .79 for 5th)
1.65 high range
5.12 diffs
35's
@ 100kph - 3972rpm
This is WAY lower than I expected and very usable with the 660. I;m pretty stoked.
Crawl is 131:1
I reckon that is a pretty good outcome.

how did you come to 1.638 for high range have you got gear reduction as standed its around 1.2-3 i thought and even with S2's its around 1.5

Trail Tough 6.4:1 - 1.65 high.
Sorry - didn't realise you weren't talking to me.

the 3412 rpm you talk of is what mine pretty much read with stock everything.
now its all up the shit due to 31's.

so have i got it wrong some how or would it acturly be like that with the gears
i dunno how high mine revs atm since mine doesn't have a tacho
