hey guys i have been researching a replacement high amp alternator for my gq with the shitty 50 amp hitachi unit. so i have had lots of info saying you can adapt commdore alternators and have a new alternator built to suit this ends up being around 120amps. problem is you have to modify brackets and all that jazz, so after alot of stuffing around, here is what i have worked out 2 options.

found an auto elce that can upgrade my standard alt to 120amp using bosch internals in my housing says its all bolt on but $400


or cooldrive in box hill quoted me $293 plus gst for a direct bolt on replacement alternator no modifying brackets or changing plugs all bolt on. they are 100amp and have no problems with low rpm charge.

just thought some might be interested.

you can also buy a universal 120amp one for around the $150 mark, but i dont think it would bolt straight up

yeah spot on grinch the inversal is a bosch one. you need to modify the mounting bracket to make it work and if its the one that im thinking of you have problems with the universal one not producing enough amps at idle to keep a gq happy.

Falcon or commo would not be difficult to adapt at all, and under $100.

An EB or whatever falcon alternator is already 85A if you get the right one, later models get you over 100A. Most wreckers only charge forty bucks or so for a used one, then just get some new brushes and you're set.

Well i just upgraded to after market one, TD42 one though with vac pump, 100Amps for $550, my old one for my GQ 4.2L petty cost me $490 which was 100A

Bought an EL Falcon 110 amp alternator off ebay, 5.50, $30 bucks postage !!

Not too much mucking around, fairly simple to adapt, and plugs are the same

i wouldn't mind running Twin Alternators on my GQ, one to charge the main battery and one to charge second

I have a small 50amp alt off a Diahatsu Charade sitting here, thinking of making a bracket up and having it run off the extra pulley on the TD42.

or did you buy the cooldriveone if so was it boltup and can you put up part number.

I have modified a Leese Neville 140amp in my GQ TB42 the alternator is off some mining machine. Only had to make up a spacer for the bottom legs and two bolts in the base as the patrol runs one long bolt. was still able to use the top bracket. had to cut out the airbox mounting bracket abit as it is f#@ki*g big. I have upgraded the wiring loom for the lights and run 80 110 in headlights, have 2 narva spotties up front and 4 Hella spots on roof when night driving. with all lights blarring it still charges at 14 volts. Good enough for me for the nice sum of $70 (bearing and brushes) Alternator was from Herbohns Auto electrics in Kingaroy.
