Outer Limits 4x4 Board

So I have decided I want one of these:

I like the size (will fit snugly between my sun visors and above my rear-view), and GME seems to be a good brand.



But not sure on what aerial to get. I will be doing A LOT of flat open driving and want maximum range, so high Db is the go apparently?

And where would be the best spot to mount the aerial for best range? Top of steel bull bar, side mounted onto bonnet, or at the back on the spare wheel carrier?

Or is it better to get two aerials, one that is just 9db, and then another separate lower db one to change to when I'm in town or in thick scrub?

For the best range it needs to be clear of all obstructions, mainly metal ones.
If you can mount it so it's above your roofline you will get maximum range in all directions, if it's lower than your roof and on your bullbar or side of bonnet you will reduce range bahind you, and if you mount it to your spare tyre carrier you will lose range in front.
Also don't mount it too close to other antennas or pillars, keep it at least 30cm away from any metal.
Most mount to the bullbar because it's easy, but it is a compromise. It's not as practical to mount antennas on your roof.

You probably won't notice a heap of difference on HF Barnsey. Easier to get a decent earth on the bullbar too, and that IS important on HF.

On UHF, the higher the better, but the trade-off is that UHF antennas tend to be not as robust and comparitively more expensive.

If you drive in country where there are a lot of overhanging branches or have to use underground carparks, then definitely go for the bullbar mount.

have a look at the 6.5 ground independant ones with the big base and spring on bottom, they work good.

I plan on getting a tx3200, I did have it on my b'day list, but nothing was touched on that list....................

anyway, I plan to run a AE4018K1 with it off the bull bar, as it's a ground independant anttennae.
