If there was/is a recall you would off/will recieve a letter from toyota informing you of a recall.
So I wouldnt worry to much.

There WAS a recall on the early 80s 1HZ engines with loose dowells behind the timing belt cover but I'm sure thats long been cleared up.

There was multiple recalls on 80`s (early ones anyway)

Have asked around with other toyota techs and they have told me no issues on the later 1HZ's . Although these donks can be unpredictable with a turbo straped to the side and boosted to much! mines hanging in there after 170ks , best money spent would be getting hold of a multivalve 1HD-FT and bolting her in !!!!!

what price did he get wrong?
i can go and buy a 1hdt any day of the week for $7500
and a 1hz is only worth 3k, might get a bit more for yours since its so new though.

when i was pricing the 1hdt it was about 7k for the motor and all the bolt on bits were extra plus turbo etc so it was over $10k for a motor with history i knew jack about and then i had to put it in $$$
I can see where zoltan is comming from based on my experiences but i suspect he was a little harsh in his questioning.....
made for a good laugh though - no offence

Ive seen some wreckers wanting $15k for them....what a laugh....the guy who bought the hdft for his hzj105 paid 7500 he might have been lucky...i know another guy with one in his hzj80 who paid 8500 etc etc...they are now superceeded by 2 motors...not that the wreckers care...but if you keep an eye on pickles.com you will find the odd 80 series t/d wreck go for 5-7k for the lot...if you were patient...u could retro a factory turbo motor into your car and sell the leftovers to end up costing you nothing...

I havent seen or herd of any recall's. although i do a know a couple of people who have had there big end bearing changed by toyota free of charge. but only on the 1hdt and 1hdft, not the 1hz. The 1hdt and 1hdft had a problem with bearing flaking it seems to be happening because the bearing is overheating and the base material deforming under the shock of the power stroke. Dont be bagging the 1hz its a good engine and there a many people out there with 300-400 thousand klm's old turbo 1hz's. The main problem with turbo 1hz's is that there are structural issues in the head (especially around the pre-combustion chambers) and the pistons can't handle the boost and heat being significintly lighter than those fitted to the 1hdt and 1hdft. But if treated right (not to much boost) then a 1hz can last a life time.

you all dont factor much in when you price engines do you?
ok i can say yes to 3k for a 1hz... but thats an over 300k km block with a reco.... remember people its still a 300k km block just with a few new bearings and a head skim... oh and no history is given...
now i have a block thats realy new in all respects and i know its history... as it has none...
and for the person saying the 1hz has been superseeded... yes and no.
the 1hz is still too different than the 1uz and is better in different allocations..
anyway each to their own

You can get 1hz's from toyota brand spanking new for $5500, just have to buy 10 at a time.

anybody notice these 1hz's like to roll away on hills?
I have had 5 landcruisers all 1998 and onwards and the 1HZ after about 80k will not hold on a hill in first gear.....
CRAZAY shenanigans, have they got really low compression?

i have noticed this also... they are still running 22:1 compression though

Zoly....the hdft (that i was talking about) has been superceeded by the hdfte in the 100 and now the v8 t/d (not the 1uz) sorry if i wasnt more specific....
I was refering to you selling your 1hz for 3 to recoup money spent of hdft (out of the late 80 series)....or fit a hdfte and have more power again...but the wiring would send you around the bend, and increase cost...you may wish to turbo what you have..but you should only do that if you will leave the boost at an acceptable limit, or you will have head issues due to heat. If you want to end up with heaps of kw's then your better off looking for a hdft from a insurance wreck, they bolt straight in, and hook up to existing fuel system. You can play with them quite a lot, and 160kw is easily achievable
