Air con pulleys

Just a quick 'un.
You know how with alternators, you can nearly always swap pulleys because there's nearly always a 1/2" shaft with a key? So, you can usually get away with buying a used alternator and count on swapping your existing pulley onto it.
Well, is this generally the case with AC compressor pulleys, which are a bit more complicated?
That is, if I buy a Sanden compressor with a multi-groove type pulley, will I probably be able to swap a vee-belt type pulley on without major hassles?
