Outer Limits 4x4 Board

ive got a 83 hard top siera and just wondering where people have relocated there fuel tank so it is more out of the way. i was thinking of putting fuel cell in the bck behind back seats with breather hoses runnig out side.
is a fuel cell legal in the cabin. any ideas.

think it is legal to have a fuel tank in the cab, my mate has his fuel tank in the back of his toyota hiace as he notched an air baged it!!

landcruisers came out stock with fuel tanks in the car under the seat

Have you checked a tank out of a Suzuki Carry Van? Same fuel fittings,breather line, sender plug but a lot shallower. Still 40L. Filler neck is same size but is higher in tank so neck can go above chassis rail (if you have BL) I'll get measurements tomorrow.

yeah mate you can have a fuel tank inside the car, the Law states you must be able to fill the car from the outside. So if you run a filler hose and spout you'd be fine . if it was in a soft top i guess you would get away with just the cell. tim

I won't be doing this as I now have a battery in the way(See thread:2nd battery IN floor). I have to go to my brother-in-laws tomorrow so I'll get measurements again(and pics). I measured it up a while ago but decided to fit a battery instead.

Don't do it - I reckon you will regret this forever.

Not only will you loose nearly all your usable storage space, you will raise the COG as well.

Greg's old green car (the 660 one) had a LWB vitara tank set through the floor behind the front seats. It bolted down to the floor on its mounting flange. This worked well, but Greg never carries much in his car and it had a false floor over it which was part of the cage and shock mounts.

Vitara SWB tanks are a pretty good fit into the stock location of a sierra once the exhaust is relocated. If you have a BL, you can pull the tank up really high - almost level with the bottom of the chassis rails.

spend the dollars and get a long range, they're heavier construction, approved for the use and tuck up really nicely...

Well here it is. 1983 Suzuki ST90 Carry van.
Tank is 645mm(L) X 375mm (W) X 160mm(H) plus a 15-30mm mounting flange on all sides. The pipes etc on top of tank are about 60mm but can be lowered(bent). I just did a quick measure on mine and with between chassis rails is not a problem. If you have a two inch BL the bottom of the tank will be just below the chassis rail. A lot higher than a stock tank.

So.. how many litres does a standard tank for sierra have? just filled my drover for the first time and only put in 32L... i thought the tank was roughly about 50L to 60L?

40L for a undented tank.

majority dont hold much more than 35 due to being smacked on everything

I got hold of a rare undented tank and bolted a skid plate over it. I got mine from Metrocheck before it changed to Climax not sure if he still does them. Its taken some hard hits and not a dent yet !

This is a bit off the topic, but one of the girls that works at the greasy spoon down the street has a 91 WT soft top with a FACTORY FUEL TANK SKIDPLATE

There is nothing else weird about the car at all - go figure!
