Sure some are $5k but some are also $10k. Price depends on use and condition. Being petrol is also an issue but also they only started at $39990 when new so they were cheaper than cruisers to start with. Have a look at other big petrol 4wds on the same era and you will find they also have had a major price drops. A petrol 80 series will be hard pressed to break through $10k in typical condition - some are more some are cheaper but when they were new they were $15k more expensive than a disco and then you had to pay for A/c on top.

There is nothing wrong with the discos - the best most capable 4wd off the show room floor for the money. However remember they are 11-12 years old so most will be high km - expect to pay high $$ for pristine low km examples - oh fuel consumption is less than you might think.

disco buy

Post by claud »

really ,i suppose its a small v8 ,is there any major part in driveline to look out for when buying a high mileage one? i know it usually depends on servicing and type of use ,but any well known weakness?my old 84 hilux has done heaps and rough stuff too yet its box, axles and cvs are still
kickin. im amazed actually i think its due to a much lighter car and smaller 4cyl engine.
thanks for the advice man

Some of the cheaper examples are quite good but some are shitboxeas, like anyhting really you get what you pay for. Bloke in our club bought a 95 Disco for less than $3K but had a couple of issues but generally it was a good Disco with about $180K or so on the clock too :D

Also there's quite a few sellers who want waaay too much for there Discos and some well.. are dreamers  .

95-96 Disco shouldn't be worth more than $7-8K for a good one, ES spec (leather, ABS etc...) will fetch more. But there's alwways exceptions to the rule.

Also depends on what State you are buying in. I found NSW and Vic to have the cheapest and largest range of Discos when I was looking.

I paid $8k for my 1994 V8 Disco from just south of Sydney 9 months ago. That cost included getting it back to Brisbane. It was a base model V8 manual but immaculate with only 155k and a long list of aftermarket options. Only issue was a couple of oil leaks. None of which prevented it getting its safety certificate on its first go.

For the same price in Qld you would get a stock neglected Disco with rust.

I too noticed that the fuel economy has never been as bad as I was told it would be.

As for Reads Disco. I don't know where he found it but it sounds like it was a great deal but don't expect to get a deal like that straight away. More of a right place right time deal I think.

I think the biggest issue with the driveline would be the transfer case input gear. They can wear out and take the mainshaft with them. Mine was fine as it had an oil feed plate but can get very costly if they are buggered. From what I've read an auto is easy to do as it doesn't have a mainshaft and whatever it is they do have can be removed without box removal. Search for it here and you'll get a better idea of what I'm on about.
Although if it is auto I think 250k is their listed life span.

An excellent car for the money.

Also keep in mind when you are looking that a 1991-early 1994 Disco1 is very different to a 1994-early 1999 Disco1 due to an update.

Our 97 300TDI Auto has done 285000kms, no transfer case issues, no auto issues until recently where it seems like the sprag is slipping on takeoff.

Breakages have been, Steering box (I hit a log at speed), Turbo rebuild at 260,000 a couple of wheel bearings and just normal wear and tear items.

This is on a vehical which has done 2 round oz trips, 1 with a camper trailer, 1 with caravan, towed many horse floats and boats and has also taken us to Alice springs.

The people I bought it off had every single reciept for every cent spent on it and I have service stamps in the book from all corners of OZ in it's owners manual.

The V8's can be a little more trouble in some ways than the Diesel but the Diesel makes up for it in others.

The older ones are probably cheap because of the out dated interior and ugly colour scheem of the interiors but if youve driven a hilux, you'd be used to that (that wonderful blue interior of the old ones was great).

Youve done very well out of your luxy, I know many people who have broken CV's and tranfercases in luxies while parked at Kmart, they arnt the strongest in the early models and the Gboxes in some of the later ones are the dodgy part.

You wont be disapointed in a good Disco and dont be scared away from a high km one as generally they are well looked after as they were mostly bought by the more wealthy of us that could afford to service them at LR.

have D1 that is now heavily modified, and could not be happier. Yup D1 upgrades are much better - dash is more functional, drive train is improved, lloks are enhanced, trim is better fit and quality etc, and the 3.9 is a better engine.

But I just love the blue of the D1, and don't really care too much about the rattling sqeaking older style dash and misfitted trim, odd door gaps and so on. The vehicle only cost 3.2K anyway, and it has stood up to an almighty thrashing over the last 18 months with repair costs totalling only hundreds of dollars - fuel pump, dizzy advance control and many, many wheel bearings (mud is really bad on them).

I'm seriously looking at buying a D1 upgrade four door and would buy another Disco for family bus without hesitation, to replace the 96 Paj which is turning out to be a POS in ti's old age. I think I've fallen in love:)
Nice gq swb ute chop with a huffer for the good times
