A friend of mine kindly gave me a safari snorkel for my birthday present.
What a LEDGEND !
I have a LN106 diesel 2.8, and i am very happy with it.
I copied the template, with some light card that was the same as the original. In this I also marked the center of the large hole for the outer guard, and after marking on the guard the center of this, I then measured, and cut the hole out of the copied template.
I then used a drill to drill inside the marked large hole on the guard, and then used tin snips to nip the small bits between then, and then used a file to enlarge to the marked size.
Once this was done, I then placed the copied template, which had the large hole cut out of it onto the guard, and then placed the snorkel in position, I then taped the template to the snorkel, and removed the snorkel, and template together as one unit.
I then was able to mark accurately where the 4 locating holes were on the template by pushing my pen thru into the corresponding holes.
With this now maked in the template, I then refitted the template, (which I had accurately marked on the guard so as to refit it exactly where it was, and then could drill with confidence that the holes were in the correct spot.
I drilled the holes out to 14mm, and checked that they were in the correct spot, and they were, and then took them out to the required size as per the destructions.
Once again, I fitted the snorkel in place, and then marked and drilled the A pillar mount, and then made the inner hole same long way as the outer hole, and then fitted the required doublers.
I painted all exposed surfaces with some white Kill rust paint I had laying around, and fitted up the snorkel.
I used the lower studs to hold the snorkel in place, and then put in the two upper bolts, which cleared the guard.
With that all fitted, the top screws in the A pillar were fitted with a dob of sillastic, and then I fitted the connecting hose, and airfilter box etc.
Results.
At 2200 to 2500 I had a terrible vibration, which I felt I had to look at.
Next day I made sure that there was no pressure between the airfilter box, and the snorkel, as before there was a bit of prelaod between then if you know what I mean, With this addressed, it certainly reduced the vibration, and after putting some padding around the arial where it may have touched the guard, and now its very quiet.
I do notice induction noise, as it was quiet before, but its not as bad as the early 3Ltr 5L motor lux's with a noisy airbox.
Just thought I would let you know my results with the fitting, and tweaking.
I have noticed at light to med throttle better response, and speed, and when under load its not that noticable, however when going up hills that would only maintain speed, or need a lower gear, that I can now accelerate, albeit slowly up them, or maintain the gear.
Cheers
