I took a look at a set of Toyo MT's at Arctic Cool Treads the other day. They have the thickest and most solid sidewall I have ever seen.

Has anyone used these and what are your comments?

They aren't particularly cheap - $380ea 285/75/16

Thanx

You can get 36 swampers cheaper than that... You would want to be sure about em...

Toyo Opats have a good name amongst tourers.

Good solid 3ply construction and they also run dual Nylon Overwraps.

Cheers,

It's mostly the physical thickness and stiffness of the sidewall I noticed. After sidewalling a Cooper AT last weekend at 25psi I have the sh*ts with sidewall damage.

I really want an AT as I also want wet weather on road performance, but can't find an AT with bobcat tyre sidewalls :)

damn I was going to look at some of these to replace my tyres but not at those prices

You will find that more bitumen orientated tyres like AT's run a slightly thinner sidewall. They generally have 2 body plies whereas the more aggressive patterns run 3. There are a few benefits to this. Better heat dispersion through the sidewall (tyre runs cooler and doesn't wear quite as quick) and the tyre requires less weight to balance (reduces likelihood of vibration or ride problems) which is what you want for a more road going tyre.

Hope this helps,
Ryano

sick tires. Alot of guys in the states run these, i just got back from there a few months ago, and thought i'd look at a set. Priced a set today $365 a tire for 33 x 12.5 x15! A bit steep i thought

they sound similar to the Trxus thing that interco have... also out of this world in price, but reports said that they had a solid sidewall.

I priced up a set of these in a 33 and 305/75 and they where dearer then a MTR, MTZ and Xterrians  . I wont be spending the money on them when the others are tried and tested. I got my prices from a toyo dealer and he was shocked in the price.

I saw some Toyo MTs today for the first time on a GU and was very impressed with the tread pattern. I will try these tyres next.

Bought 315/75R16's for the new GQ Today.

Will report back on them.

Also considered the Pro Comp Xtreme M/T.

Bought on the sidewall.

Trxus was good and I would of have had another set but the reviews and physical sidewall size.

Now someone buy my 285 BFG AT and Ti rims :)

Can you post some pics up when you do your report.

Toyo would be most expensive MT tyre on the market but once you have seen them, they look like they are worth the extra $. This tyre looks like a Coopers STT on steroids.

Yep, 10% heavier than any other 3 ply sidewall radial that I can find.

And I crash into things.

How do these tyres perform offroad.
Sand?
Mud?
Rock?

Road, awesome best muddy I have driven on.

Need to be at around 25psi on a heavy LWB to compensate for the sidewall and load rating on road.

Fast Dirt again awesome.

Will report back as they go through other surfaces.

I raced with these tyres on the Australasian Safari this year. They were very good on fast tracks and stood up well to the rough stuff as well

Im using them on both defenders now

Sand is fine on the defender 130 running 14psi in the soft beach sections

Thanks for the Feedback Dave, what size are you running?

The 315/75R16 were close to the weight of my Simex 35 x 12.5 15's

Hi Lockee

Remembering Im running them on an offroad race car (110) and a tow car/ tourer (130) so they are small compared to what most guys on here would use

In both cases 265/75/16 or close to 32in. I think this is about the standard height wise on a defender anyway

Plenty of pics here

http://www.offroadinoz.com/viewtopic.php?t=1020

As I say these have been Aust Safari tested and held up well. Ive given feedback to Toyo on how they held up in the event and Im quite happy with them. Id also be happy to run the same set again in the Safari

Robby Gordon in the US is using them and I think in 37in on his racing hummer and they were also used in the last Dakar he used his Hummer in

First real off road last night.

Mainly dirt and rocky hills with a few boggy bits thrown in. Mt Dissa Vic for those that know.

Much more resistant to chipping than other tyres I have run on fast hard rocky hills.

Good clearing in Muddy ruts.

Still very Happy.

26psi on road, 18 off so far has worked the best considering the sidewall.

30psi too stiff even on heavy GQ on the road.
