For those who are looking for alternate diff ratios here are the ratios available in Vitaras and Grand Vitaras/XL-7's and their tooth count.
Ring Pinion Ratio
43/ 10: 4.3
37/ 8 : 4.625
39/ 8 : 4.785
41/ 8 : 5.125
There also a 5.38 ( 43/8) and a 5.62 (?) in overseas markets and Calmini offer a 5.83 (35/6).

I recall from one of the really old mail list about the 5.83's being quite a soft gear to help compensate of the burr sized pinion gear.

Rumor has it they are are so soft that front ones are manufactured from air. The more common steel versions have not been available for, oh, about 1,000,000 years.
Apparently steel ones are not too far away.
