Outer Limits 4x4 Board

lets start with mine..98 gu 4.5 on gas 130 thou
left for work last monday morning get 1 km down the road and the car starts surging on gas as if im running out of fuel..pull over to check and thers still a good 1/4 tank..mmmm seams a bit odd so jump in and start to go again and get the same prob, only this time i see steam coming from where the gas mixer sits. i stop, pop the bonnet and the mixer is frozen checked the radiator and it's bone dry! assuming i had a cracked hose just filled it back up(all 8 odd litres of it).drove to work on petrol just to be safe.

Got to work and we had a suss.radiator is empty again..one of the boys checked the dip stick...oh o..water in the oil.. assuming it's a cracked head, that arvo the old boy and i take the head off and theres not a crack in sight... just a absolute mess of "mud" oil everywhere! dads mate pressure tests it the next day, and the heads fine!! thank god for that wasnt keen to spend afew grand! so last night good old dad left me to pull the radiator out and check the water pump.surprise surprise, water pump is rat sh1t and theres a hole in the timing case!!so now the sump, dizzy pully's etc have all got to come out, to get the timing case off!!

looks like the waters been cavitating in the pump for quite some time cos there is ALOT of corrosion.it's worn away maby 10mm of the front of the timing case.!!!bad coolant i assume??!! problem solved at least just waiting on some prices for a new timing case and water pump!
if the timing case is to expensive its getting a weld job..!

has anyone else ever had the timing case crack or get a hole in it??
in all dads life of being a mechanic hes only ever fixed 5 or so!

Then as luck would have it dad went away for the weeknd fishing with the boys and blew 5th gear on the highway in his 2000 zd30 95 odd thou..now does anyone know or have experiance with nissan on warranty claims, correct me if im wrong but didn't nissan come to the party regarding 5th gear problems in the diesels on certain years models??!!

now they say good things always happens in 3's..
mums 94 diesel paj blew the clutch and needs a new spiket bearing!! lol

looks like the old mans going to be busy when he gets home.lol

well dunno..
i thought that since nissan where aware of the 5th gear problem they did replace/fix the problem even if cars where out of warrenty??!!
but it is 2007 isnt it..his car is a good 3 years out of warranty
are well if worse comes to worse its only the price of a 5th gear cog..

Mates 4500 GU 2001 model had the timing case corrode also ...common prob and may be due to something really bad.

well i think dad may have found the sorce of the problem....
has extractors fitted just after i bought it 10 odd months ago and today while inspecting the empty engine bay dad noticed that the earth lead that goes onto the exhaust manifold wasn't put back on...
Which as dad explained causes negative current which can destroy any cooling member of an engine...
so it's of to the exhaust place tomoza and have a chat!!
of coarse the only way to prove it has got negative current is wait untill the engine is back together and test it!!
going to be a hard case to prove i think

To check for stray current, when the motor is running, put one terminal of your multi-metre in the coolant in the radiator (cap off obviously ), and the other on the negative terminal of the battery. See if there is any voltage between the coolant and earth. If there is excessive amount, then earth out the loose earth lead you mentioned and see if it changes.

yeah sorry i meant stray current..had negative in my head for some reason..
yeah that was the plan, when she's all up and running test for stray current.i remember on my old gq which had extractors, that the earth lead was attached to a welded nut on the exractors.
dads all but certain that this is the cause for the timing case and water pump being chopped to sh1t.!
oh and got some prices today for the timing case..wait for it, $1088 for brand new genuine or $270 odd for second hand one off a wreck..i know which one i'l be buying!!

I saw the same thing eat out a VL Turbo head in 6 months, the exhaust side, in this case passenger side was eated out, the head was welded extensivly to be repaired, the earth strap was never refitted after the previuos workshop had done the head. The damage was very clear to see.
I would suggest you also check the gas converter, I've seen them fail in the bottom gasket where the heat exchange bit is, where they pump enough water into the engine via the gas hose vapour line to cause the oil to go milkey. They often still run on both gas and petrol but usually the gas stops and they only run on petrol.

seen lots of tb42/45 with cavitation problems in the timing case found it to be quite a common problem, we have a modified water pump which we have been using for a while now and all seems to be good.
the aftermarket water pump has a hand made impeller which stops alot of this cavitation (totaly different shape and design from standard)
they are a little more expensive but still cheaper than the headache you are going through.
