Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey, I flushed the old power steering fluid out of my 97 hzj80 4.2D recently and it was very dirty but the system still worked fine up until I flsuhed it. Now when its cold the pumps making all sorts of groaning noises under load(ie moving wheels when stationary). What I want to know is how long can you ignore this before it sh#ts itself completely, and if I were to fix it am I just replacing the steering box or what? Any help is appreciated. Oh and if any1 knows roughly how much you'd be looking to fix it?? Also would it be that I've replaced it with the incorrect power steering fluid? Just used autotrans power steering fluid from caltex but flushed a fair bit through the system put the return pipe in a bottle n kept filling it up with new fluid..

It may still have air in the lines. this can be removed by having the vehicle stationary whilst idling and with the filler cap of slowly turn the wheels from lock to lock a few times, check fluid and top up as needed cos it will spill out a bit. repaet this a few times and if it doesnt fix it its time for a new pump.

Yours will show signs of needing replacing if there is a fair bit of oil around the back of the pump and may seep oil umder stationary load.

I replaced mine witha reco unit i got through my auto electrician for $295 exchange. I recomend replacing the hoses from the reservoir to the pump as well with the larger hose needing to be sourced from toyota as it was an odd size on mine. also replase those stupid spring clamps with good quality hose clamps.

I would just replacing the oil with lubramax power steering and then bleed system like the last guy said.

power steer oil is thicker than auto trans. However, i believe you still have air...how did u drain it?? did u take the pipe off the pump?? if so, the oring in there might be sucking air.
