I am guessing you want a DC-DC convertor to step 12v in your vehicle down to 9v to run something?

How you go about it, will depend on what you want to run.

It could be as simple as using one of these to plug into your ciggy lighter

Or if you need a couple of amps, something like this

Plenty of off the shelf items available to do it depending on your needs.

wow thanks mate thats great info all i have to do is to get to run 2 of them
input : 230 - 240vac 50hz
output : 9v -- 210ma
what i was hoping for it a way to bypass is all so i can run it all from the 12 volt in a car/4x4

the one from jaycar that you found for me info on it said Output voltages are 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9 and 12VDC at 2,000mA. this is what is on the power pack 9 v - 210 mA so i take it will not stuff up and it is all DC power
and dose it work like this 9 v = 9volt 210ma on each = 420ma in total ?

thanks for your great help

All DC, that first type can be found just about anywhere, from Dick Smiths to Harvey Norman. It just plugs into a cigerette lighter and the other end has various adaptors to fit the end to suit whatever you're plugging it into.

The only thing i have done to the couple i have is once i select the right voltage i put a bit of silastic around the switch so it can't move and then wrap a bit of insulation tape around it to further prevent the selector switch from being moved.

dude... why dont u just put a resistor inline... will cose you about 5c per resistor

work out whitch one u need with a resistor coulour chart..

then just get a feed from your batterie and solder the resistor inline ...

problem solved.. cheaper then buying power packs and all sorts of shit

Where do you fine the coulour chart at ?
What will happen if you burn out the resistor ?
if it stuff up will it send 12 volts down the line ?

Sorry, what is it that you want to run on 9V?

If the resistor burns out it will either open circuit or short circuit. If it's shorts it will supply 12v. Also with a resistor it is unregulated, so as voltage rises and falls due to charging, ignition off etc, the voltage will also rise and fall. Depending on what you're using it for, this could be a major problem.

I am guessing by that power pack in your picture, that it's for something like a handheld UHF????? If so, i would have thought Uniden would be make a cigarette lighter charger to suit anyway.

The current you require is determined by the device drawing the power. Your plug pack is rated to deliver 210mA (will probably deliver more) but it should only be delivering as much as the device draws from the other end.

A resistor will work, but as well as being the cheapest solution it's also the nastiest. The risk depends on what you're powering.

What's on the other end of the plug pack? Spend the $25 and get the Jaycar converter - think of it as an investment, you can use it on other stuff too.

hey Scott thanks for that I went down to jaycar and got the jaycar device and it all works:) I have test it, works great all I have to do is make a box to house the lot then the job is done :) just one more of my list
thanks for every ones help you all rock later Michael
